1 Samuel 1:4-20

On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, (A)he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.[a] And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? (B)Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of (C)the temple of the Lord. 10 She was (D)deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. 11 And she (E)vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed (F)look on the affliction of your servant and (G)remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, (H)and no razor shall touch his head.”

12 As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. 14 And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” 15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but (I)I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not regard your servant as (J)a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” 17 Then Eli answered, (K)“Go in peace, and the God of Israel (L)grant your petition that you have made to him.” 18 And she said, (M)“Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman (N)went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

19 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at (O)Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord (P)remembered her. 20 And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”[b]

1 Samuel 2:1-10

Hannah's Prayer

And Hannah prayed and said,

(A)“My heart exults in the Lord;
    (B)my horn is exalted in the Lord.
My mouth derides my enemies,
    because (C)I rejoice in your salvation.

(D)“There is none holy like the Lord:
    for there is none besides you;
    there is (E)no rock like our God.
Talk no more so very proudly,
    let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the Lord is a God of knowledge,
    and by him actions are weighed.
(F)The bows of the mighty are broken,
    but the feeble bind on strength.
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
    but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger.
(G)The barren has borne seven,
    (H)but she who has many children is forlorn.
(I)The Lord kills and brings to life;
    he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
(J)The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
    (K)he brings low and he exalts.
(L)He raises up the poor from the dust;
    he lifts the needy from the ash heap
(M)to make them sit with princes
    and inherit a seat of honor.
(N)For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's,
    and on them he has set the world.

(O)“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones,
    but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness,
    for not by might shall a man prevail.
10 (P)The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces;
    (Q)against them he will thunder in heaven.
(R)The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;
    he will give strength to his king
    (S)and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

Hebrews 10:11-14

11 And every priest stands (A)daily at his service, (B)offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, (C)which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ[a] had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he (D)sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time (E)until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering (F)he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

Hebrews 10:15-18

15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16 (A)“This is the covenant that I will make with them
    after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
    and write them on their minds,”

17 then he adds,

(B)“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

Hebrews 10:19-25

The Full Assurance of Faith

19 (A)Therefore, brothers,[a] since we have confidence to enter (B)the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by (C)the new and living way that he opened for us through (D)the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have (E)a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts (F)sprinkled clean (G)from an evil conscience and our bodies (H)washed with pure water. 23 (I)Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for (J)he who promised is faithful. 24 And (K)let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 (L)not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and (M)all the more as you see (N)the Day drawing near.

Mark 13:1-8

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

13 (A)And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? (B)There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

And as he sat on (C)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, (D)Peter and James and John and (E)Andrew asked him (F)privately, “Tell us, (G)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” And Jesus began to say to them, (H)“See that no one leads you astray. (I)Many will come in my name, saying, (J)‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, (K)do not be alarmed. This (L)must take place, but the end is not yet. For (M)nation will rise against nation, and (N)kingdom against kingdom. There will be (O)earthquakes in various places; there will be (P)famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.
