Psalm 113

Psalm 113[a]

113 Praise the Lord.
Praise, you servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord.
May the Lord’s name be praised
now and forevermore.
From east to west[b]
the Lord’s name is deserving of praise.
The Lord is exalted over all the nations;
his splendor reaches beyond the sky.[c]
Who can compare to the Lord our God,
who sits on a high throne?[d]
He bends down to look[e]
at the sky and the earth.
He raises the poor from the dirt,
and lifts up the needy from the garbage pile,[f]
that he might seat him with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He makes the barren woman of the family[g]
a happy mother of children.[h]
Praise the Lord.

Genesis 24:28-42

28 The young woman ran and told her mother’s household all about[a] these things. 29 (Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban.)[b] Laban rushed out to meet the man at the spring. 30 When he saw the bracelets on his sister’s wrists and the nose ring[c] and heard his sister Rebekah say,[d] “This is what the man said to me,” he went out to meet the man. There he was, standing[e] by the camels near the spring. 31 Laban said to him,[f] “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord![g] Why are you standing out here when I have prepared[h] the house and a place for the camels?”

32 So Abraham’s servant[i] went to the house and unloaded[j] the camels. Straw and feed were given[k] to the camels, and water was provided so that he and the men who were with him could wash their feet.[l] 33 When food was served,[m] he said, “I will not eat until I have said what I want to say.”[n] “Tell us,” Laban said.[o]

34 “I am the servant of Abraham,” he began. 35 “The Lord has richly blessed my master and he has become very wealthy.[p] The Lord[q] has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys. 36 My master’s wife Sarah bore a son to him[r] when she was old,[s] and my master[t] has given him everything he owns. 37 My master made me swear an oath. He said, ‘You must not acquire a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 38 but you must go to the family of my father and to my relatives to find[u] a wife for my son.’ 39 But I said to my master, ‘What if the woman does not want to go[v] with me?’[w] 40 He answered, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked,[x] will send his angel with you. He will make your journey a success and you will find a wife for my son from among my relatives, from my father’s family. 41 You will be free from your oath[y] if you go to my relatives and they will not give her to you. Then you will be free from your oath.’ 42 When I came to the spring today, I prayed, ‘O Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you have decided to make my journey successful,[z] may events unfold as follows:[aa]

Luke 4:16-30

Rejection at Nazareth

16 Now[a] Jesus[b] came to Nazareth,[c] where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue[d] on the Sabbath day, as was his custom.[e] He[f] stood up to read,[g] 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He[h] unrolled[i] the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed[j] me to proclaim good news[k] to the poor.[l]
He has sent me[m] to proclaim release[n] to the captives
and the regaining of sight[o] to the blind,
to set free[p] those who are oppressed,[q]
19 to proclaim the year[r] of the Lord’s favor.”[s]

20 Then[t] he rolled up[u] the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on[v] him. 21 Then[w] he began to tell them, “Today[x] this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read.”[y] 22 All[z] were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They[aa] said, “Isn’t this[ab] Joseph’s son?” 23 Jesus[ac] said to them, “No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself!’[ad] and say, ‘What we have heard that you did in Capernaum,[ae] do here in your hometown too.’” 24 And he added,[af] “I tell you the truth,[ag] no prophet is acceptable[ah] in his hometown. 25 But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days,[ai] when the sky[aj] was shut up three and a half years, and[ak] there was a great famine over all the land. 26 Yet[al] Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.[am] 27 And there were many lepers[an] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha,[ao] yet[ap] none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”[aq] 28 When they heard this, all the people[ar] in the synagogue were filled with rage. 29 They got up, forced[as] him out of the town,[at] and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that[au] they could throw him down the cliff.[av] 30 But he passed through the crowd[aw] and went on his way.[ax]
