Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Lord Speaks
38 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind.(A) He said:
2 Who is this who obscures my counsel
with ignorant words?(B)
3 Get ready to answer me like a man;
when I question(C) you, you will inform me.
4 Where were you when I established(D) the earth?
Tell me, if you have[a] understanding.
5 Who fixed its dimensions? Certainly you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 What supports its foundations?
Or who laid its cornerstone
7 while the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God(E) shouted for joy?
34 Can you command[a] the clouds
so that a flood of water covers you?(A)
35 Can you send out lightning(B) bolts, and they go?
Do they report to you, “Here we are”?
Psalm 104
God the Creator
1 My soul, bless the Lord!
Lord my God, you are very great;
you are clothed with majesty and splendor.(A)
2 He wraps himself in light as if it were a robe,
spreading out the sky like a canopy,(B)
3 laying the beams of his palace
on the waters above,(C)
making the clouds his chariot,(D)
walking on the wings of the wind,(E)
4 and making the winds his messengers,[a]
flames of fire his servants.(F)
5 He established the earth on its foundations;
it will never be shaken.(G)
6 You covered it with the deep
as if it were a garment;
the water stood above the mountains.(H)
7 At your rebuke the water fled;
at the sound of your thunder they hurried away(I)—
8 mountains rose and valleys sank[b]—
to the place you established for them.(J)
9 You set a boundary they cannot cross;
they will never cover the earth again.(K)
35 May sinners vanish from the earth
and wicked people be no more.(A)
My soul, bless the Lord!
Hallelujah!
Christ, a High Priest
5 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also clothed with weakness.(A) 3 Because of this, he must make an offering for his own sins as well as for the people.(B) 4 No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was.(C) 5 In the same way, Christ did not exalt himself to become a high priest, but God who said to him,
6 also says in another place,
7 During his earthly life,[d] he offered prayers and appeals(F) with loud cries and tears(G) to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered.(H) 9 After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10 and he was declared by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
Suffering and Service
35 James(A) and John,(B) the sons of Zebedee,(C) approached him and said, “Teacher,(D) we want you to do whatever we ask you.”
36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked them.
37 They answered him, “Allow us to sit at your right and at your left in your glory.”(E)
38 Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking.(F) Are you able to drink the cup(G) I drink or to be baptized with the baptism(H) I am baptized with?”(I)
39 “We are able,” they told him.
Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with.(J) 40 But to sit at my right or left is not mine to give; instead, it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
41 When the ten disciples heard this, they began to be indignant with James and John.(K) 42 Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over(L) them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among you.(M) On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant,(N) 44 and whoever wants to be first among you will be a slave to all.(O) 45 For even the Son of Man(P) did not come to be served, but to serve,(Q) and to give his life(R) as a ransom(S) for many.”[a](T)
