Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Prayer of a Suffering Man
39 I said, “I will watch my ways so I may not sin with my tongue. I will keep my mouth shut as if it were tied with ropes, while the sinful are near me.” 2 I stayed quiet, not even saying anything good. And my sorrow grew worse. 3 My heart was hot within me. As I thought about things, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue, 4 “O Lord, let me know my end and how many days I have to live. Let me know that I do not have long to stay here. 5 You have made each of my days as long as a hand is wide. My whole life is nothing in Your eyes. Every man at his best is only a breath. 6 Every man walks here and there like a shadow. He makes a noise about nothing. He stores up riches, not knowing who will gather them.
7 And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. 8 Save me from all my sins. Do not let me be put to shame by the foolish. 9 I cannot speak. I do not open my mouth because it is You Who has done it. 10 Do not punish me any more. I am growing weak by the beatings of Your hand. 11 With sharp words You punish a man for sin. You destroy like a moth what is of worth to him. For sure, every man is only a breath.
12 O Lord, hear my prayer, and listen to my cry. Do not be quiet when You see my tears. For I am a stranger with You, a visitor like all my fathers. 13 Look away from me, so I may have joy again before I go and am no more.”
Job Talks
26 Then Job answered, 2 “What a help you are to the weak! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! 3 How you have given wise words to him who has no wisdom! How much true learning you have given! 4 To whom have your words been said? And from whose spirit have you spoken?
5 “The spirits of the dead shake under the waters and those living in them. 6 The place of the dead has no covering before God and the place that destroys has no covering. 7 He spreads out the north over empty waste, and hangs the earth on nothing. 8 He holds the waters in His clouds, and the cloud does not break under them. 9 He covers the face of the moon and spreads His cloud over it. 10 He has marked the sides around the waters where light and darkness are divided. 11 The pillars of heaven shake with fear. They are surprised and afraid of His sharp words. 12 He made the sea quiet by His power. And by His understanding He destroyed Rahab. 13 By His breath the heavens are made beautiful. His hand cut through the snake as it tried to get away. 14 See, these are only a few of the things He does. And how quiet are the words spoken about Him! But who can understand His powerful thunder?”
The Many People Who Belonged to God
9 After this I saw many people. No one could tell how many there were. They were from every nation and from every family and from every kind of people and from every language. They were standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white clothes and they held branches in their hands. 10 And they were crying out with a loud voice, “We are saved from the punishment of sin by our God Who sits on the throne and by the Lamb!” 11 Then all of the angels standing around the throne and around the leaders and the four living beings got down on their faces before God and worshiped Him. 12 They said, “Let it be so! May our God have worship and shining-greatness and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength forever. Let it be so!”
13 Then one of the twenty-four leaders asked me, “Who are these people dressed in white clothes? Where did they come from?” 14 I answered him, “Sir, you know.” Then he said to me, “These are the ones who came out of the time of much trouble. They have washed their clothes and have made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God. They help Him day and night in the house of God. And He Who sits on the throne will care for them as He is among them. 16 They will never be hungry or thirsty again. The sun or any burning heat will not shine down on them. 17 For the Lamb Who is in the center of the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to wells of the water of life. God will take away all tears from their eyes.”
