Psalm 55:1-15

Prayer of a Man Hurt by a Friend

55 Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not hide Yourself from what I ask. Hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I have no peace, because of the voice of those who hate me and the power of the sinful. For they bring trouble upon me, and in anger they keep on having bad thoughts against me.

My heart is in pain within me. The fears of death have come upon me. I have begun shaking with fear. Fear has power over me. And I say, “If only I had wings like a dove, I would fly away and be at rest. Yes, I would go far away. I would live in the desert. I would hurry to my safe place, away from the wild wind and storm.”

Mix them up, O Lord. Divide their tongues. For I have seen fighting and trouble in the city. 10 They go around on its walls day and night. Sin and wrong-doing are within it. 11 Destroying powers are in the city. Trouble and lies never leave its streets.

12 I would be able to take it if one who hates me were putting me to shame. I could hide from him. It is not one who hates me who has put himself up against me. 13 But it is you, a man like myself, one who has gone with me, my close friend. 14 We shared together. And we walked with the people in the house of God. 15 Let death take them by surprise. Let them go down alive to the grave. For sin is with them where they live.

Job 11

Zophar Talks

11 Then Zophar the Naamathite answered, “Should many words go without an answer? Should a man full of talk be said to be without blame? Should your words of pride make men quiet? Should you make fun of truth and no one speak sharp words to you? For you say, ‘What I believe is pure. I am without fault in Your eyes.’ If only God would speak, and open His lips against you. He would show you the secrets of wisdom because there are two sides. Then you would know that God is punishing you less than you should get.

“Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out how far the All-powerful can go? They are higher than the heavens. What can you do? They are deeper than the place of the dead. What can you know? They are longer than the earth and wider than the sea. 10 If He passes by, puts a man in prison, or calls him to trial, who can stop Him? 11 For He knows men who are no good. When He sees wrong-doing, will He not look into it? 12 A fool cannot become wise anymore than a wild donkey can give birth to a man.

13 “If you set your heart right, and put out your hands to Him, 14 and if you put away the sin that is in your hand, do not let wrong-doing be in your tents. 15 Then you will be able to lift up your face without sin. You would be strong and not afraid. 16 For you would forget your trouble, remembering it as waters that have passed by. 17 Your life would be brighter than noon. Darkness would be like the morning. 18 Then you would trust, because there is hope. You would look around and rest and be safe. 19 You would lie down and no one would make you afraid. Many would ask for your favor. 20 But the eyes of the sinful will waste away. There will be no way for them to get away. And their hope is to breathe their last.”

1 Corinthians 7:10-16

10 I have this to say to those who are married. These words are from the Lord. A wife should not leave her husband, 11 but if she does leave him, she should not get married to another man. It would be better for her to go back to her husband. The husband should not divorce his wife. 12 I have this to say. These words are not from the Lord. If a Christian husband has a wife who is not a Christian, and she wants to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 If a Christian wife has a husband who is not a Christian, and he wants to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 The husband who is not a Christian is set apart from the sin of the world because of his Christian wife. The wife who is not a Christian is set apart from the sin of the world because of her Christian husband. In this way, the lives of the children are not unclean because of sin, they are clean. 15 If the one who is not a Christian wants to leave, let that one go. The Christian husband or wife should not try to make the other one stay. God wants you to live in peace. 16 Christian wife, how do you know you will not help your husband to become a Christian? Or Christian husband, how do you know you will not help your wife to become a Christian?
