Proverbs 1:20-33

20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets.

21 She crieth in the chief places of concourse, in the openings of the gates; in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

22 “How long, ye simple ones, will ye love to be simple, and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

23 Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you; I will make known my words unto you.

24 “Because I have called and ye refused, I have stretched out my hand and no man heeded,

25 but ye have set at nought all my counsel and would have none of my reproof,

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh,

27 when your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me,

29 because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord.

30 They would have none of my counsel, and they despised all my reproof:

31 therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own ways, and be filled with their own devices.

32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them;

33 but whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall have quiet from fear of evil.”

Psalm 19

19 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth His handiwork.

Day upon day uttereth speech, and night upon night showeth knowledge.

There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.

Their sound has gone forth through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath He set a tabernacle for the sun,

which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.

His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it; and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them is Thy servant warned, and in keeping of them there is great reward.

12 Who can understand his errors? Cleanse Thou me from secret faults.

13 Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me. Then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent of the great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my Strength and my Redeemer.

James 3:1-12

My brethren, let not many be masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man and able also to bridle the whole body.

Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.

Behold also the ships, which though they be so great and are driven by fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the helmsman pleases.

Even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a wood a little fire kindleth!

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. So is the tongue among our members that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire from hell.

For every kind of beast and bird and serpent and thing in the sea is tamed, and hath been tamed, by mankind.

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Therewith we bless God, even the Father, and therewith we curse men, who are made in the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth from the same place sweet water and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries, or a vine figs? So no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.

Mark 8:27-38

27 And Jesus went out with His disciples into the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He asked His disciples, saying unto them, “Who do men say that I am?”

28 And they answered, “John the Baptist; but some say Elijah, and others, one of the prophets.”

29 And He said unto them, “But whom say ye that I am?” And Peter answered and said unto Him, “Thou art the Christ.”

30 And He charged them that they should tell no man of Him.

31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and by the chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

32 And He spoke that saying openly. And Peter took Him and began to rebuke Him.

33 But when He had turned about and looked on His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, “Get thee behind Me, Satan; for thou savorest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.”

34 And when He had called the people unto Him with His disciples also, He said unto them, “Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My sake and the Gospel’s, the same shall save it.

36 For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

38 Whosoever, therefore, shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of Man be ashamed when He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
