Psalm 11

Refuge in the Lord

For the choir director. Davidic.

I have taken refuge in the Lord.(A)
How can you say to me,
“Escape to the mountain like a bird![a](B)
For look, the wicked string the bow;
they put the[b] arrow on the bowstring
to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.(C)
When the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?”(D)

The Lord is in His holy temple;(E)
the Lord’s throne is in heaven.(F)
His eyes watch; He examines[c] everyone.
The Lord examines the righteous and the wicked.
He hates the lover of violence.(G)
He will rain burning coals[d] and sulfur on the wicked;
a scorching wind will be their portion.[e](H)
For the Lord is righteous; He loves righteous deeds.
The upright will see His face.(I)

1 Kings 6:15-38

15 he paneled the interior temple walls with cedar boards; from the temple floor to the surface of the ceiling he overlaid the interior with wood. He also overlaid the floor with cypress boards.(A) 16 Then he lined 30 feet[a] of the rear of the temple with cedar boards from the floor to the surface of the ceiling,[b] and he built the interior as an inner sanctuary, the most holy place.(B) 17 The temple, that is, the sanctuary in front of the most holy place,[c] was 60 feet[d] long. 18 The cedar paneling inside the temple was carved with ornamental gourds(C) and flower blossoms. Everything was cedar;(D) not a stone could be seen.

19 He prepared the inner sanctuary(E) inside the temple to put the ark of the Lord’s covenant(F) there. 20 The interior of the sanctuary was 30 feet[e] long, 30 feet[f] wide, and 30 feet[g] high; he overlaid it with pure gold.(G) He also overlaid the cedar altar. 21 Next, Solomon overlaid the interior of the temple with pure gold, and he hung[h] gold chains(H) across the front of the inner sanctuary(I) and overlaid it with gold. 22 So he added the gold overlay to the entire temple until everything was completely finished, including the entire altar(J) that belongs to the inner sanctuary.

23 In the inner sanctuary he made two cherubim(K) 15 feet[i] high out of olive wood. 24 One wing of the first cherub was 7½ feet long,[j] and the other wing was 7½ feet long. The wingspan was 15 feet[k] from tip to tip. 25 The second cherub also was 15 feet;[l] both cherubim had the same size and shape. 26 The first cherub’s height was 15 feet[m] and so was the second cherub’s. 27 Then he put the cherubim inside the inner temple. Since their wings were spread out, the first one’s wing touched one wall while the second cherub’s wing touched the other[n] wall, and in the middle of the temple their wings were touching wing to wing.(L) 28 He also overlaid the cherubim with gold.

29 He carved all the surrounding temple walls with carved engravings—cherubim,(M) palm trees and flower blossoms—in both the inner and outer sanctuaries. 30 He overlaid the temple floor with gold in both the inner and outer sanctuaries.

31 For the entrance of the inner sanctuary, he made olive wood doors.(N) The pillars of the doorposts were five-sided.[o] 32 The two doors were made of olive wood. He carved cherubim, palm trees, and flower blossoms on them and overlaid them with gold, hammering gold over the cherubim and palm trees. 33 In the same way, he made four-sided[p] olive wood doorposts for the sanctuary entrance. 34 The two doors(O) were made of cypress wood; the first door had two folding sides, and the second door had two folding panels. 35 He carved cherubim, palm trees, and flower blossoms on them and overlaid them with gold applied evenly over the carving. 36 He built the inner courtyard(P) with three rows of dressed stone(Q) and a row of trimmed cedar beams.

37 The foundation of the Lord’s temple was laid in Solomon’s fourth year in the month of Ziv. 38 In his eleventh year in the eighth month, in the month of Bul,[q] the temple was completed in every detail and according to every specification.(R) So he built it in seven years.(S)

John 15:16-25

16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you.(A) I appointed you that you should go out and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask(B) the Father in My name,(C) He will give you.(D) 17 This is what I command you: Love one another.

Persecutions Predicted

18 “If the world hates(E) you, understand that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen(F) you out of it, the world hates you. 20 Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’(G) If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word,(H) they will also keep yours. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of My name,(I) because they don’t know(J) the One who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin.[a](K) Now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates Me also hates My Father.(L) 24 If I had not done the works(M) among them that no one else has done,(N) they would not have sin.(O) Now they have seen and hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened so that the statement written in their scripture might be fulfilled:(P) They hated Me for no reason.(Q)[b]
