Psalm 101

A Vow of Integrity

A Davidic psalm.

I will sing of faithful love and justice;
I will sing praise to You, Lord.(A)
I will pay attention to the way of integrity.
When will You come to me?
I will live with a heart of integrity in my house.(B)
I will not set anything worthless before my eyes.
I hate the practice of transgression;
it will not cling to me.(C)
A devious heart will be far from me;
I will not be involved with[a] evil.(D)

I will destroy anyone
who secretly slanders his neighbor;(E)
I cannot tolerate anyone
with haughty eyes or an arrogant heart.(F)
My eyes favor the faithful of the land
so that they may sit down with me.
The one who follows the way of integrity
may serve me.(G)
No one who acts deceitfully
will live in my palace;
no one who tells lies
will remain in my presence.[b](H)
Every morning I will destroy
all the wicked of the land,
eliminating all evildoers from the Lord’s city.(I)

1 Kings 8:1-21

Solomon’s Dedication of the Temple

At that time Solomon assembled the elders(A) of Israel,(B) all the tribal heads(C) and the ancestral leaders of the Israelites before him at Jerusalem in order to bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from the city of David,(D) that is Zion.(E) So all the men of Israel were assembled in the presence of King Solomon in the seventh month, the month of Ethanim,[a] at the festival.(F)

All the elders(G) of Israel came, and the priests(H) picked up the ark.(I) The priests and the Levites brought the ark of the Lord, the tent of meeting,(J) and the holy utensils that were in the tent.(K) King Solomon and the entire congregation of Israel, who had gathered around him and were with him in front of the ark, were sacrificing sheep and cattle that could not be counted or numbered, because there were so many.(L) The priests brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the temple, to the most holy place(M) beneath the wings of the cherubim. For the cherubim were spreading their wings over[b] the place of the ark, so that the cherubim covered the ark and its poles from above.(N) The poles were so long that their ends were seen from the holy place in front of the inner sanctuary, but they were not seen from outside the sanctuary; they are there to this day.(O) Nothing was in the ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had put there at Horeb,[c](P) where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites when they came out of the land of Egypt.(Q)

10 When the priests came out of the holy place, the cloud filled the Lord’s temple,(R) 11 and because of the cloud, the priests were not able to continue ministering, for the glory(S) of the Lord filled the temple.

12 Then Solomon said:

The Lord said that He would dwell in thick darkness.(T)
13 I have indeed built an exalted temple(U) for You,
a place for Your dwelling forever.(V)

14 The king turned around and blessed(W) the entire congregation of Israel while they were standing. 15 He said:

May the Lord God of Israel be praised!
He spoke directly to my father David,
and He has fulfilled the promise(X) by His power.
He said,
16 “Since the day I brought My people Israel out of Egypt,(Y)
I have not chosen a city to build a temple in
among any of the tribes of Israel,
so that My name(Z) would be there.
But I have chosen David to rule My people Israel.”(AA)
17 It was in the desire of my father David
to build a temple for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.(AB)
18 But the Lord said to my father David,
“Since it was your desire to build a temple for My name,
you have done well to have this desire.(AC)
19 Yet you are not the one to build it;
instead, your son, your own offspring,
will build it for My name.”(AD)
20 The Lord has fulfilled what He promised.
I have taken the place of my father David,(AE)
and I sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised.(AF)
I have built the temple for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
21 I have provided a place there for the ark,
where the Lord’s covenant is
that He made with our ancestors
when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.(AG)

Mark 8:14-21

14 They had forgotten to take bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 Then(A) He commanded them: “Watch out! Beware of the yeast(B) of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”(C)

16 They were discussing among themselves that they did not have any bread. 17 Aware of this, He said to them, “Why are you discussing that you do not have any bread? Don’t you understand or comprehend? Is your heart hardened?(D) 18 Do you have eyes, and not see, and do you have ears, and not hear?(E)[a] And do you not remember?(F) 19 When I broke the five loaves for the 5,000, how many baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?”

“Twelve,” they told Him.

20 “When I broke the seven loaves for the 4,000, how many large baskets full of pieces of bread did you collect?”

“Seven,” they said.

21 And He said to them, “Don’t you understand yet?”(G)
