Psalm 61

Assurance of God’s Protection

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

61 Hear my cry, O God,
listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to thee,
    when my heart is faint.
Lead thou me
    to the rock that is higher than I;
for thou art my refuge,
    a strong tower against the enemy.

Let me dwell in thy tent for ever!
    Oh to be safe under the shelter of thy wings!Selah
For thou, O God, hast heard my vows,
    thou hast given me the heritage of those who fear thy name.

Prolong the life of the king;
    may his years endure to all generations!
May he be enthroned for ever before God;
    bid steadfast love and faithfulness watch over him!

So will I ever sing praises to thy name,
    as I pay my vows day after day.

2 Samuel 7:18-29

David’s Prayer

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that thou hast brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in thy eyes, O Lord God; thou hast spoken also of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast shown me future generations,[a] O Lord God! 20 And what more can David say to thee? For thou knowest thy servant, O Lord God! 21 Because of thy promise, and according to thy own heart, thou hast wrought all this greatness, to make thy servant know it. 22 Therefore thou art great, O Lord God; for there is none like thee, and there is no God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 What other[b] nation on earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name, and doing for them[c] great and terrible things, by driving out[d] before his people a nation and its gods?[e] 24 And thou didst establish for thyself thy people Israel to be thy people for ever; and thou, O Lord, didst become their God. 25 And now, O Lord God, confirm for ever the word which thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house, and do as thou hast spoken; 26 and thy name will be magnified for ever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of thy servant David will be established before thee. 27 For thou, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, hast made this revelation to thy servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house’; therefore thy servant has found courage to pray this prayer to thee. 28 And now, O Lord God, thou art God, and thy words are true, and thou hast promised this good thing to thy servant; 29 now therefore may it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee; for thou, O Lord God, hast spoken, and with thy blessing shall the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.”[f]

Hebrews 13:17-25

17 Obey your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will have to give account. Let them do this joyfully, and not sadly, for that would be of no advantage to you.

18 Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. 19 I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner.

Benediction

20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you[a] that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Final Exhortation and Greetings

22 I appeal to you, brethren, bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly. 23 You should understand that our brother Timothy has been released, with whom I shall see you if he comes soon. 24 Greet all your leaders and all the saints. Those who come from Italy send you greetings. 25 Grace be with all of you. Amen.
