Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Lord’s Covenant with David
7 When the king had settled into his palace(A) and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, 2 the king said to the prophet Nathan,(B) “Look, I am living in a cedar house while the ark of God sits inside tent curtains.”(C)
3 So Nathan told the king, “Go and do all that is on your mind, for the Lord is with you.”
4 But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: 5 “Go to my servant David and say, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you to build me a house to dwell in?(D) 6 From the time I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until today I have not dwelt in a house; instead, I have been moving around with a tent as my dwelling.(E) 7 In all my journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever spoken a word to one of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, asking: Why haven’t you built me a house of cedar?’
8 “So now this is what you are to say to my servant David: ‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel.(F) 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. I will make a great name(G) for you like that of the greatest on the earth.(H) 10 I will designate a place(I) for my people Israel and plant them,(J) so that they may live there and not be disturbed again. Evildoers will not continue to oppress them as they have done 11 ever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel.(K) I will give you rest from all your enemies.
“‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord himself will make a house for you. 12 When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.(L) 13 He is the one who will build a house for my name,(M) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(N) 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.(O) When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals.
20 I have found David my servant;
I have anointed him with my sacred oil.(A)
21 My hand will always be with him,
and my arm will strengthen him.(B)
22 The enemy will not oppress[a] him;
the wicked will not afflict him.(C)
23 I will crush his foes before him
and strike those who hate him.(D)
24 My faithfulness and love will be with him,
and through my name
his horn will be exalted.(E)
25 I will extend his power to the sea
and his right hand to the rivers.(F)
26 He will call to me, ‘You are my Father,(G)
my God, the rock of my salvation.’(H)
27 I will also make him my firstborn,
greatest of the kings of the earth.(I)
28 I will always preserve my faithful love for him,
and my covenant with him will endure.(J)
29 I will establish his line forever,
his throne as long as heaven lasts.[b](K)
30 If his sons abandon my instruction
and do not live by my ordinances,(L)
31 if they dishonor my statutes
and do not keep my commands,(M)
32 then I will call their rebellion
to account with the rod,
their iniquity with blows.(N)
33 But I will not withdraw
my faithful love from him
or betray my faithfulness.(O)
34 I will not violate my covenant
or change what my lips have said.(P)
35 Once and for all
I have sworn an oath by my holiness;
I will not lie to David.(Q)
36 His offspring will continue forever,
his throne like the sun before me,(R)
37 like the moon, established forever,
a faithful witness in the sky.”(S)Selah
Unity in Christ
11 So, then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh—called “the uncircumcised” by those called “the circumcised,”(A) which is done in the flesh by human hands.(B) 12 At that time you were without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of promise,(C) without hope(D) and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood(E) of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who made both groups one(F) and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In his flesh, 15 he made of no effect the law consisting of commands and expressed in regulations, so that he might create(G) in himself one(H) new man from the two, resulting in peace. 16 He did this so that he might reconcile both to God in one body(I) through the cross by which he put the hostility to death.[a] 17 He came and proclaimed the good news(J) of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.(K) 18 For through him we both have access(L) in one Spirit to the Father.(M) 19 So, then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,(N) with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building, being put together,(O) grows into a holy temple in the Lord.(P) 22 In him you are also being built together(Q) for God’s dwelling(R) in the Spirit.
Feeding of the Five Thousand
30 The(A) apostles(B) gathered around Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught. 31 He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
32 So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place, 33 but many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they ran on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.[a]
34 When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd and had compassion(C) on them, because they were like sheep(D) without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things.
Miraculous Healings
53 When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret(A) and anchored there.
54 As they got out of the boat, people immediately recognized him. 55 They hurried throughout that region and began to carry the sick(B) on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 Wherever he went, into villages, towns, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch just the end(C) of his robe.(D) And everyone who touched it was healed.
