Psalm 29

Psalm 29

The Voice of the Lord

A psalm of David.

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,[a]
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord
in the splendor of his holiness.[b](A)

The voice of the Lord is above the waters.
The God of glory thunders—
the Lord, above the vast water,(B)
the voice of the Lord in power,
the voice of the Lord in splendor.(C)
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.(D)
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,(E)
and Sirion, like a young wild ox.(F)
The voice of the Lord flashes flames of fire.(G)
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.(H)
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth[c](I)
and strips the woodlands bare.(J)
In his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned, King forever.(K)
11 The Lord gives his people strength;(L)
the Lord blesses his people with peace.(M)

Isaiah 5:15-24

15 Humanity is brought low, each person is humbled,
and haughty eyes are humbled.(A)
16 But the Lord of Armies is exalted by his justice,(B)
and the holy God(C) demonstrates his holiness through his righteousness.(D)
17 Lambs will graze
as if in[a] their own pastures,(E)
and resident aliens[b] will eat
among the ruins of the rich.

18 Woe to those who drag iniquity
with cords of deceit(F)
and pull sin along with cart ropes,
19 to those who say,
“Let him hurry up and do his work quickly
so that we can see it!
Let the plan(G) of the Holy One of Israel(H) take place
so that we can know it!”
20 Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,(I)
who substitute darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who substitute bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.
21 Woe to those who consider themselves wise
and judge themselves clever.[c](J)
22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine,
who are champions at pouring beer,(K)
23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe(L)
and deprive the innocent of justice.

24 Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes straw
and as dry grass shrivels in the flame,
so their roots will become like something rotten
and their blossoms will blow away like dust,
for they have rejected(M)
the instruction of the Lord of Armies,
and they have despised
the word of the Holy One of Israel.(N)

John 15:18-20

Persecutions Predicted

18 “If the world hates(A) you, understand that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen(B) you out of it, the world hates you. 20 Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’(C) If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word,(D) they will also keep yours.

John 15:26-27

The Counselor’s Ministry

26 “When the Counselor(A) comes, the one I will send to you from the Father(B) —the Spirit of truth(C) who proceeds from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 You also will testify,(D) because you have been with me from the beginning.
