Psalm 77

Remembering God’s Help

For the director of music. For Jeduthun [C a Levitical musician; 1 Chr. 16:41–42; 25:1, 6; 2 Chr. 5:12]. A psalm of Asaph [C a Levitical musician, a descendant of Gershon, at the time of David; 1 Chr. 6:39; 15:17; 2 Chr. 5:12].

77 I cry out to God;
    I call to God, and he ·will hear [or heard] me.
I ·look [sought] for the Lord on the day of ·trouble [L my distress].
    All night long I ·reach out my untiring hands [L flow forth my hand and it does not grow weak],
    but I ·cannot [refuse to] be comforted.
When I remember God, I ·become upset [moan];
    when I ·think [reflect; meditate], ·I become afraid [my soul faints]. ·Selah [Interlude]

You ·keep my eyes from closing [L grab the eyelids of my eyes].
    I am too ·upset [disturbed] to say anything.
I keep thinking about the old days,
    the years of long ago [C when things were going well].
At night I remember my songs.
    I ·think [meditate] and ·I ask myself [L my spirit inquires]:
“Will the Lord reject us forever?
    Will he never be ·kind [favorable] to us again?
Is his ·love [loyalty] gone forever?
    Has he stopped speaking for all time [C he questions God’s commitment to the covenant]?
Has God forgotten ·mercy [compassion]?
    Is he too angry to ·pity [have mercy on] us?” ·Selah [Interlude]
10 Then I say, “This is what makes me sad:
    ·For years the power of God Most High was with us [L The right hand of the God Most High has changed].”

11 I remember what the Lord did;
    I remember the ·miracles [wonderful acts] you did long ago.
12 I ·think [mused] about all the things you did
    and ·consider [meditated on] your deeds.

13 God, your ways are holy.
    ·No god [L What god…?] is as great as our God.
14 You are the God who does ·miracles [wonders];
    you have ·shown [made known to] people your power.
15 By your ·power [L arm] you have ·saved [redeemed] your people,
    the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. ·Selah [Interlude]

16 God, the waters saw you;
    they saw you and ·became afraid [L writhed];
    the deep waters shook with fear.
17 The clouds poured down their rain.
    The ·sky [clouds] ·thundered [L gave forth a sound].
    Your lightning flashed back and forth like arrows.
18 Your thunder sounded in the whirlwind.
    Lightning lit up the world.
    The earth trembled and ·shook [quaked].
19 You made a way through the sea
    and paths through the ·deep [L many] waters,
    but your footprints were not ·seen [revealed].
20 You led your people like a flock
    by ·using [L the hand of] Moses and Aaron [Ex. 14–15].

Job 5:8-27

“But if I were you, I would ·call on [L seek] God
    and ·bring my problem [L commit my thoughts/cause] before him [C argues that Job needs to repent].
God does wonders that cannot be understood;
    he does so many ·miracles [marvelous acts] they cannot be counted.
10 He gives rain to the earth
    and sends water on the fields.
11 He makes the ·humble [lowly] person important [Ps. 113]
    and lifts ·the sad [mourners] to places of safety.
12 He ruins the ·plans [pretensions; strategies] of those who ·trick others [are crafty]
    so ·they [L their hands] have no success.
13 He catches the ·wise [crafty; clever] in their own ·clever traps [craftiness]
    and ·sweeps away [ends; finishes off] the ·plans [advice; schemes] of those who ·try to trick others [are wily].
14 Darkness ·covers them up [or encounters them] in the daytime;
    even at noon they ·feel [grope] around in the dark.
15 God saves the needy from their lies
    and from the harm done by powerful people.
16 So the poor have hope,
    while those who are ·unfair [unjust] ·are silenced [L shut their mouth].

17 “The one whom God ·corrects [reproves] is ·happy [blessed],
    so do not ·hate being corrected by [L reject/despise the instruction of] the Almighty [Prov. 3:11–12].
18 God ·hurts [wounds], but he also bandages up;
    he ·injures [strikes], but his hands also heal.
19 He will ·save [rescue] you from six ·troubles [dangers];
    even seven ·troubles [or evils] will not ·harm [L touch] you [C “six…seven” is a poetic way of saying “all troubles”].
20 God will ·buy you back [redeem/ransom you] from death in times of ·hunger [famine],
    and in ·battle [war] he will save you from the sword.
21 You will be ·protected [hidden] from the ·tongue that strikes like a whip [lash of the tongue],
    and you will not be afraid when destruction comes.
22 You will laugh at destruction and hunger [Ps. 112:7],
    and you will not fear the wild animals,
23 because you will have an ·agreement [treaty; alliance; covenant] with the stones in the field,
    and the wild animals will be at peace with you [C describes a peaceful relationship with all nature].
24 You will know that your tent is safe,
    because you will ·check [visit] ·the things you own [your pasturage/home] and find nothing missing.
25 You will know that you will have many ·children [descendants],
    and your ·descendants [offspring] will be like the grass on the earth.
26 You will come to the grave ·with all your strength [or at a ripe old age],
    like bundles of grain gathered at the right time.

27 “We have ·checked [examined] this, and it is true,
so hear it and ·decide what it means to you [know it yourself].”

1 Peter 3:8-18

Suffering for Doing Right

Finally, all of you should ·be in agreement [be like-minded; live in harmony], ·understanding each other [sympathetic], ·loving each other as family [L showing brotherly love], being ·kind [tender; compassionate] and humble. Do not ·do wrong to repay a wrong, and do not insult to repay an insult [L repay evil for evil or insult for insult]. But repay with a blessing, because you yourselves were called [C by God] to do this so that you might ·receive [L inherit] a blessing [Luke 6:27–28]. 10 ·The Scripture says [L For],

“·A person must do these things [L The one who wants]
    to ·enjoy [L love] life and have many happy days.
He must ·not say evil things [L keep his tongue from evil],
    and he must ·not tell lies [L keep his lips from speaking lies].
11 He must ·stop doing [turn away from] evil and do good.
    He must ·look for [seek] peace and ·work for [L pursue] it.
12 ·The Lord sees the good people [L The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous]
    and ·listens to [L his ears on] their prayers.
But the [L face of the] Lord is against
    those who do evil [Ps. 34:12–16; compare Rom. 12:9–17].”

13 If you are ·trying hard [eager; zealous; passionate] to do good, ·no one [L who…?] can really ·hurt [harm; do evil to; mistreat] you. 14 But even if you suffer for ·doing right [righteousness], you are blessed [Matt. 5:10].

“Don’t be afraid of ·what they fear [or their threats/intimidation];
    do not ·dread those things [be disturbed/intimidated; Is. 8:12–13].”

15 But ·respect Christ as the holy Lord [L sanctify Christ as Lord; Is. 8:13] in your hearts [C that is, acknowledge his holiness and sovereignty in your life]. Always be ready to ·answer [or give a defense to] everyone who asks you to explain about the hope ·you have [L that is in you], 16 but answer in a ·gentle [humble] way and ·with respect [or with fear/reverence for God]. Keep a ·clear [good] conscience so that ·those who speak evil of [L when you are accused, those slanderers of] your good ·life [behavior; conduct] in Christ will be made ashamed. 17 It is better to suffer for doing good than for doing ·wrong [evil] if that is ·what God wants [the will of God]. 18 Christ himself suffered for sins ·once [or once for all; C only his suffering has the power to redeem others]. ·He was not guilty, but he suffered for those who are guilty [L …the righteous for the unrighteous] to bring you to God. ·His body was killed [L He was put to death in the flesh/body], but he was made alive in the ·spirit [or Spirit; C at his resurrection in a glorified body].
