Psalm 46

God Protects His People

For the director of music. By ·alamoth [maidens; young women; C perhaps for soprano voices]. A psalm of the sons of Korah [C descendants of Kohath, son of Levi, who served as Temple musicians; 1 Chr. 6:22].

46 God is our ·protection [refuge] and our strength.
    He ·always helps [is an ever present/timely help] in times of ·trouble [distress].
So we will not be afraid even if the earth ·shakes [quakes],
    or the mountains ·fall [reel; totter] into the heart of the sea,
even if the ·oceans [L waters] roar and foam,
    or the mountains ·shake [tremble] at ·the raging sea [L its surging]. ·Selah [Interlude]

There is a river ·that [L whose channels/streams] brings joy to the city of God,
    the holy place where God Most High lives.
God is in that city, and so it will not ·be shaken [reel; totter].
    God will help her at dawn.
Nations ·tremble [roar] and kingdoms ·shake [reel; totter].
    God ·shouts [L gives forth his voice] and the earth ·crumbles [melts].

The Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] is with us;
the God of Jacob is our ·defender [refuge; fortress]. ·Selah [Interlude]

Come and see what the Lord has done,
    ·the amazing things he has done [or the desolations he has brought] on the earth.
He stops wars ·everywhere on [L to the ends of] the earth.
    He breaks all bows and shatters spears
    and burns up the ·chariots [or shields] with fire.
10 God says, “Be still and know that I am God.
    I will be ·praised [exalted] in all the nations;
I will be ·praised [exalted] throughout the earth.”

11 The Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] is with us;
the God of Jacob is our ·defender [refuge; fortress]. ·Selah [Interlude]

Proverbs 8:1-21

Listen to Wisdom

·Wisdom calls to you like someone shouting [L Does not Wisdom call out?];
    ·understanding raises [Does not Understanding raise…?] her voice.
On the ·hilltops [L top of the high places] along the road
    and at the crossroads, she ·stands calling [takes her stand].
Beside the city gates,
    at the entrances into the city, she calls out:
“Listen, ·everyone [men], I’m calling out to you;
    ·I am shouting [my voice goes out] to all ·people [L the sons of humanity].
You who are ·uneducated [simpleminded; immature; naive], ·seek wisdom [understand prudence].
    You who are foolish, ·get understanding [L take this to heart].
Listen, because I have ·important [noble] things to say,
    and what I tell you is ·right [virtuous].
·What I say is true [L My mouth utters the truth],
    ·I refuse to speak evil [L my lips despise wickedness].
·Everything I say is honest [L All the speeches of my mouth are righteous];
    nothing I say is ·crooked [twisted] or ·false [perverse].
People ·with good sense [who understand] know what I say is ·true [straightforward];
    and those ·with [L who seek] knowledge know my words are ·right [virtuous].
10 ·Choose [Take] my ·teachings [instructions; discipline] instead of silver,
    and knowledge rather than ·the finest [choice] gold.
11 Wisdom is more precious than ·rubies [or pearls].
    Nothing ·you could want is equal to [is more delightful than] it.

12 “I am Wisdom, and I ·have good judgment [dwell with prudence].
    I also have knowledge and ·good sense [discretion].
13 ·If you respect the Lord, you will also [L Those who fear/have awe for the Lord] hate evil.
    I hate pride and ·bragging [arrogance],
    ·evil ways [L the path of evil] and ·lies [L a perverse mouth].
14 I have advice and ·good sense [resourcefulness; ability],
    and I have understanding and ·power [strength].
15 ·I help kings to govern [L By me kings reign]
    and ·rulers [princes] ·to make fair laws [issue just decrees].
16 ·Princes use me to lead [L By me rulers rule],
    and ·so do all important people who [nobles] judge fairly [Deut. 34:9; 1 Kin. 3:1–15; Ezra 7:25; Col. 1:16].
17 I love those who love me,
    and those who seek me find me.
18 Riches and honor are mine to give.
    So are lasting wealth and ·success [or righteousness].
19 What I give is better than gold, even the finest gold,
    my ·results [yield] better than the purest silver.
20 I ·do what is right [L walk on the way of righteousness]
    ·and follow [L in the midst of] the path of justice.
21 I ·give wealth to those who love me [L cause those who love me to inherit substance],
    filling their houses with treasures.

Mark 3:13-19

Jesus Chooses His Twelve Apostles(A)

13 Then Jesus went up ·on a mountain [to the hills] and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 Jesus ·chose [appointed] twelve [C paralleling the twelve tribes of Israel] and called them apostles[a] [C “apostle” means a messenger, or someone sent with a commission]. He wanted them to be with him, and he wanted to send them out to preach 15 and to have the authority to ·force [drive; cast] demons out of people. 16 These are the twelve he ·chose [appointed]: Simon (Jesus named him Peter), 17 James and John, the sons of Zebedee (Jesus named them Boanerges, which [C in Aramaic] means “Sons of Thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot [C either religiously zealous, or a (former) member of the revolutionary movement known as Zealots], 19 and Judas Iscariot [C Iscariot probably means “man of Kerioth”], who later ·turned against [betrayed] Jesus.
