Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Nineveh Turns from Its Wicked Ways
3 Then Yahweh spoke his word to Jonah a second time. He said, 2 “Leave at once for the important city, Nineveh. Announce to the people the message I have given you.”
3 Jonah immediately went to Nineveh as Yahweh told him. Nineveh was a very large city. It took three days to walk through[a] it. 4 Jonah entered the city and walked for about a day. Then he said, “In forty days Nineveh will be destroyed.”
5 The people of Nineveh believed Elohim. They decided to fast, and everyone, from the most important to the least important, dressed in sackcloth.
10 Elohim saw what they did. He saw that they turned from their wicked ways. So Elohim reconsidered his threat to destroy them, and he didn’t do it.
5 Wait calmly for Elohim alone, my soul,
because my hope comes from him.
6 He alone is my rock and my savior—my stronghold.
I cannot be shaken.
7 My salvation and my glory depend on Elohim.
Elohim is the rock of my strength, my Machseh.
8 Trust him at all times, you people.
Pour out your hearts in his presence.
Elohim is our Machseh. Selah
9 Common people are only a whisper in the wind.
Important people are only a delusion.
When all of them are weighed on a scale, they amount to nothing.
They are less than a whisper in the wind.
10 Do not count on extortion to make you rich.
Do not hope to gain anything through robbery.
When riches increase, do not depend on them.
11 Elohim has spoken once.
I have heard it said twice:
“Power belongs to Elohim.
12 Mercy belongs to you, O Adonay.
You reward a person based on what he has done.”
29 This is what I mean, brothers and sisters: The time has been shortened. While it lasts, those who are married should live as though they were not. 30 Those who have eyes filled with tears should live as though they have no sorrow. Those who are happy should live as though there was nothing to be happy about. Those who buy something should live as though they didn’t own it. 31 Those who use the things in this world should do so but not depend on them. It is clear that this world in its present form is passing away.
Calling of the First Disciples(A)
14 After John had been put in prison, Yeshua went to Galilee and told people the Good News of God. 15 He said, “The time has come, and the kingdom of God is near. Change the way you think and act, and believe the Good News.”
16 As he was going along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the sea because they were fishermen. 17 Yeshua said to them, “Come, follow me! I will teach you how to catch people instead of fish.” 18 They immediately left their nets and followed him.
19 As Yeshua went on a little farther, he saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat preparing their nets to go fishing. 20 He immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee and the hired men in the boat and followed Yeshua.
