Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
7 2 David would build God an house, but is forbidden by the Prophet Nathan. 8 God putteth David in mind of his benefits. 12 He promiseth continuance of his kingdom and posterity.
1 Afterward (A)when the King sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies,
2 The King said unto Nathan the Prophet, Behold, now I dwell in an house of cedar trees, and the Ark of God remaineth within the [a]curtains.
3 Then Nathan said unto the king, Go, and do all that is in thine heart: for the Lord is with thee.
4 ¶ And the same night the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying,
5 Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the Lord, [b]Shalt thou build me an house for my dwelling?
6 For I have dwelt in no house since the time that I brought the children of Israel out of Egypt unto this day, but have walked in a tent and Tabernacle.
7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spake I one [c]word with any of the tribes of Israel when I commanded the Judges to feed my people Israel? or said I, Why build ye not me an house of cedar trees?
8 Now therefore so say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, (B)I took thee from the sheepcote following the sheep, that thou mightest be ruler over my people, over Israel.
9 And I was with thee wheresoever thou hast walked, and have destroyed all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a [d]great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
10 (Also I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant it, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move [e]no more, neither shall wicked people trouble them anymore as beforetime,
11 And since the time that I set Judges over my people of Israel) and I will give thee rest from all thine enemies: also the Lord telleth thee, that he will make thee an house.
16 And thine house shall be established and thy kingdom forever before thee, even thy throne shall be [a]established forever.
46 [a]Then Mary said, My soul magnifieth the Lord,
47 And my spirit rejoiceth in God my Savior.
48 For he hath [b]looked on the [c]poor degree of his servant: for behold, from henceforth shall all ages call me blessed,
49 Because he that is mighty hath done for me great things, and holy is his Name.
50 And his mercy is from generation to generation on them [d]that fear him.
51 (A)He that showed strength with his [e]arm: (B)he hath [f]scattered the proud in the [g]imagination of their hearts.
52 (C)He hath [h]put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of [i]low degree.
53 (D)He hath filled the [j]hungry with good things, and sent away the rich empty.
54 [k](E)He hath upholden Israel his servant to be mindful of his mercy,
55 ((F)As he hath [l]spoken to our fathers, to wit, to Abraham and his seed) forever.
89 1 With many words doth the Prophet praise the goodness of God, 23 For his testament and covenant, that he had made between him and his elect by Jesus Christ the son of David. 38 Then doth he complain of the great ruin, and desolation of the kingdom of David, so that to the outward appearance the promise was broken. 46 Finally, he prayeth to be delivered from his afflictions, making mention of the shortness of man’s life, and confirming himself by God’s promise.
A Psalm to give instruction, of Ethan the Ezrahite.
1 I will [a]sing the mercies of the Lord forever: with my mouth will I declare thy truth from generation to generation.
2 For I [b]said, Mercy shall be set up forever: thy truth shalt thou [c]stablish in the very heavens.
3 [d]I have made a covenant with my chosen: I have sworn to David my servant,
4 Thy seed will I stablish forever, and set up thy throne from generation to generation. Selah.
19 Thou spakest then in a vision unto [a]thine Holy one, and saidest, I have laid help upon one that is [b]mighty: I have exalted one chosen out of the people.
20 I have found David my servant: with mine holy oil have I anointed him.
21 Therefore mine hand shall be established with him, and mine arm shall strengthen him.
22 The enemy shall not oppress him, neither shall the wicked hurt him.
23 But I will [c]destroy his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.
24 My truth also and my [d]mercy shall be with him, and in my Name shall his [e]horn be exalted.
25 I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the [f]floods.
26 He shall cry unto me, Thou art my [g]Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
25 (A)[a]To him now that is of power to establish you according to my Gospel, and preaching of Jesus Christ, (B)by the revelation of the [b]mystery, which was kept secret since the world began:
26 (But now is opened, and [c]published among all nations by the Scriptures of the Prophets, at the commandment of the everlasting God for the obedience of faith.)
27 To God, I say, only wise, be praise through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.
Written to the Romans from Corinth, and sent by Phoebe, servant of the Church which is at Cenchrea.
26 ¶ [a]And in the sixth month, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 (A)To a virgin affianced to a man whose name was Joseph, of the [b]house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And the Angel went in unto her, and said, Hail thou that art [c]freely beloved: the Lord is with thee: [d]blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was [e]troubled at his saying, and thought what manner of salutation that should be.
30 Then the Angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast [f]found favor with God.
31 (B)For lo thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bear a son, (C)and shalt call his Name Jesus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be [g]called the Son of the most High, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David.
33 (D)And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom shall be none end.
34 Then said Mary unto the Angel, [h]How shall this be, seeing [i]I know not man?
35 And the Angel answered, and said unto her, The holy Ghost [j]shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee: therefore also that [k]Holy thing which shall be born of thee, shall be [l]called the Son of God.
36 And behold, thy [m]cousin, Elizabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is her [n]sixth month, which was called barren.
37 For with God shall nothing be impossible.
38 Then Mary said, Behold the servant of the Lord: be it unto me according to thy word. So the Angel departed from her.
