Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
97 1 The Prophet exhorteth all to rejoice for the coming of the kingdom of Christ, 7 dreadful to the rebels and idolaters, 8 and joyful to the just, whom he exhorteth to innocency, 12 to rejoicing and thanksgiving.
1 The [a]Lord reigneth: let the earth rejoice: let the [b]multitude of the Isles be glad.
2 [c]Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the foundation of his throne.
3 There shall go a fire before him, and burn up his enemies round about.
4 His lightnings gave light unto the world: the earth saw it and was [d]afraid.
5 The mountains melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.
7 [e]Confounded be all they that serve graven images, and that glory in idols: worship him [f]all ye gods.
8 Zion heard of it, and was glad: and the [g]daughters of Judah rejoiced, because of thy judgments, O Lord.
9 For thou, Lord, art most High above all the earth: thou art much exalted above all gods.
10 Ye that [h]love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his Saints: he will deliver them from the hand of the wicked.
11 [i]Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice ye righteous in the Lord, and give thanks for his holy [j]remembrance.
7 For when the children of Israel [a]sinned against the Lord their God, which had brought them out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and feared other gods,
8 And walked according to the fashions of the Heathen, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel, and after the manners of the kings of Israel, which they used,
9 And the children of Israel had done secretly things that were not upright before the Lord their God, and throughout all their cities had built high places, both from the tower [b]of the watch, to the defensed city,
10 And had made them images and groves upon every high hill, and under every green tree,
11 And there burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen, whom the Lord had taken away before them, and wrought wicked things to anger the Lord,
12 And served idols: whereof the Lord had said unto them, (A)Ye shall do no such thing,
13 Notwithstanding the Lord testified to Israel, and to Judah [c]by all the Prophets, and by all the Seers, saying, (B)Turn from your evil ways, and keep my commandments, and my statutes, according to all the Law, which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the Prophets.
14 Nevertheless they would not obey, (C)but hardened their necks, like to the necks of their [d]fathers, that did not believe in the Lord their God.
15 And they refused his statutes and his covenant, that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies (wherewith he witnessed unto them) and they followed vanity, and became vain, and followed the heathen that were round about them: concerning whom the Lord had charged them, that they should not do like them.
16 Finally they left all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made them molten images, (D)even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the [e]host of heaven, and served Baal.
17 And they made their sons and their daughters [f]pass through the fire, and used witchcraft and enchantments, yea, [g]sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to anger him.
18 Therefore the Lord was exceedingly wroth with Israel, and put them out of his sight, and none was left but the tribe of Judah [h]only.
19 Yet Judah kept not the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked according to the fashion of Israel, which they used.
20 Therefore the Lord cast off all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hands of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his [i]sight.
25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
26 [a]Jesus answered them, and said, Verily, verily I say unto you, Ye seek me not, because ye saw the miracles, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled.
27 [b]Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for the meat that endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath (A)God the Father [c]sealed.
28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the [d]works of God?
29 [e]Jesus answered, and said unto them, (B)[f]This is the work of God, that ye believe in him, whom he hath sent.
30 [g]They said therefore unto him, What sign showest thou then, that we may see it, and believe thee? what dost thou work?
31 Our fathers did eat Manna in the desert, as it is (C)written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
32 [h]Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto you, Moses gave you not [i]that bread from heaven, but my Father giveth you that true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.
34 Then they said unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am that bread [j]of life: he that cometh to me, shall not hunger, and he that believeth in me, shall never thirst.
