17 Then all the multitude of the children of Israel setting forward from the desert of Sin, by their mansions, according to the word of the Lord, encamped in Raphidim, where there was no water for the people to drink.

² And they chode with Moses, and said: Give us water, that we may drink. And Moses answered them: Why chide you with me? Wherefore do you tempt the Lord?

³ So the people were thirsty there for want of water, and murmured against Moses, saying: Why didst thou make us go forth out of Egypt, to kill us and our children, and our beasts with thirst?

⁴ And Moses cried to the Lord, saying: What shall I do to this people? Yet a little more and they will stone me.

⁵ And the Lord said to Moses: Go before the people, and take with thee of the ancients of Israel: and take in thy hand the rod wherewith thou didst strike the river, and go.

⁶ Behold I will stand there before thee, upon the rock Horeb: and thou shalt strike the rock, and water shall come out of it that the people may drink. Moses did so before the ancients of Israel:

⁷ And he called the name of that place Temptation, because the chiding of the children of Israel, and for that they tempted the Lord, saying: Is the Lord amongst us or not?

78 A psalm for Asaph. O God, the heathens are come into thy inheritance, they have defiled thy holy temple: they have made Jerusalem as a place to keep fruit.

² They have given the dead bodies of thy servants to be meat for the fowls of the air: the flesh of thy saints for the beasts of the earth.

³ They have poured out their blood as water, round about Jerusalem and there was none to bury them.

⁴ We are become a reproach to our neighbours: a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.

¹² And render to our neighbours sevenfold in their bosom: the reproach wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.

¹³ But we thy people, and the sheep of thy pasture, will give thanks to thee for ever. We will shew forth thy praise, unto generation and generation.

2 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of charity, if any society of the spirit, if any bowels of commiseration:

² Fulfill ye my joy, that you may be of one mind, having the same charity, being of one accord, agreeing in sentiment.

³ Let nothing be done through contention, neither by vain glory: but in humility, let each esteem others better than themselves:

⁴ Each one not considering the things that are his own, but those that are other men's.

⁵ For let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

⁶ Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

⁷ But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man.

⁸ He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross.

⁹ For which cause God also hath exalted him, and hath given him a name which is above all names:

¹⁰ That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth:

¹¹ And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.

¹² Wherefore, my dearly beloved, (as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but much more now in my absence,) with fear and trembling work out your salvation.

¹³ For it is God who worketh in you, both to will and to accomplish, according to his good will.

²³ And when he was come into the temple, there came to him, as he was teaching, the chief priests and ancients of the people, saying: By what authority dost thou these things? and who hath given thee this authority?

²⁴ Jesus answering, said to them: I also will ask you one word, which if you shall tell me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

²⁵ The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven or from men? But they thought within themselves, saying:

²⁶ If we shall say, from heaven, he will say to us: Why then did you not believe him? But if we shall say, from men, we are afraid of the multitude: for all held John as a prophet.

²⁷ And answering Jesus, they said: We know not. He also said to them: Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

²⁸ But what think you? A certain man had two sons; and coming to the first, he said: Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

²⁹ And he answering, said: I will not. But afterwards, being moved with repentance, he went.

³⁰ And coming to the other, he said in like manner. And he answering, said: I go, Sir; and he went not.

³¹ Which of the two did the father's will? They say to him: The first. Jesus saith to them: Amen I say to you, that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of God before you.

³² For John came to you in the way of justice, and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed him: but you, seeing it, did not even afterwards repent, that you might believe him.
