Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Lord Is My Strength and My Shield
Of David.
28 To you, O Lord, I call;
(A)my rock, be not deaf to me,
lest, if you (B)be silent to me,
I become like those who (C)go down to the pit.
2 (D)Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy,
when I cry to you for help,
when I (E)lift up my hands
(F)towards your most holy sanctuary.[a]
3 Do not (G)drag me off with the wicked,
with the workers of evil,
(H)who speak peace with their neighbours
while evil is in their hearts.
4 (I)Give to them according to their work
and according to the evil of their deeds;
give to them according to the work of their hands;
(J)render them their due reward.
5 Because they (K)do not regard the works of the Lord
or the work of his hands,
he will tear them down and build them up no more.
6 Blessed be the Lord!
For he has (L)heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.
7 The Lord is my strength and (M)my shield;
in him my heart (N)trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my (O)song I give thanks to him.
8 The Lord is the strength of his people;[b]
he is (P)the saving refuge of his anointed.
9 Oh, save your people and bless (Q)your heritage!
(R)Be their shepherd and (S)carry them for ever.
29 When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he (A)tore his clothes 30 and returned to his brothers and said, “The boy (B)is gone, and I, where shall I go?” 31 Then they took (C)Joseph's robe and slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. 32 And they sent the robe of many colours and brought it to their father and said, “This we have found; please identify whether it is your son's robe or not.” 33 And he identified it and said, “It is my son's robe. (D)A fierce animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces.” 34 Then Jacob tore his garments and put sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son for many days. 35 All his sons and all his daughters (E)rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, “No, (F)I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” Thus his father wept for him. 36 Meanwhile (G)the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, (H)the captain of the guard.
4 For if God did not spare (A)angels when they sinned, but (B)cast them into hell[a] and committed them to chains[b] of gloomy darkness (C)to be kept until the judgement; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but (D)preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought (E)a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 if by (F)turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, (G)making them an example of (H)what is going to happen to the ungodly;[c] 7 and (I)if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, (J)he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9 then (K)the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials,[d] and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgement, 10 and especially (L)those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and (M)despise authority.
Bold and wilful, they do not tremble (N)as they blaspheme the glorious ones,
