Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 17
A Prayer for Protection
A Davidic prayer.
1 Lord, hear a just cause;(A)
pay attention to my cry;
listen to my prayer—
from lips free of deceit.(B)
2 Let my vindication come from You,
for You see what is right.(C)
3 You have tested my heart;(D)
You have examined me at night.
You have tried me and found nothing evil;(E)
I have determined that my mouth will not sin.[a]
4 Concerning what people do:
by the word of Your lips[b]
I have avoided the ways of the violent.(F)
5 My steps are on Your paths;
my feet have not slipped.(G)
8 But you, Israel, My servant,(A)
Jacob, whom I have chosen,(B)
descendant of Abraham, My friend(C)—
9 I brought[a] you from the ends of the earth
and called you from its farthest corners.
I said to you: You are My servant;
I have chosen you and not rejected you.(D)
10 Do not fear, for I am with you;(E)
do not be afraid, for I am your God.(F)
I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand.(G)
God’s Gracious Election of Israel
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed.(A) For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.(B) 7 Neither are they all children because they are Abraham’s descendants.[a](C) On the contrary, your offspring will be traced[b] through Isaac.(D)[c] 8 That is, it is not the children by physical descent[d] who are God’s children,(E) but the children of the promise(F) are considered to be the offspring. 9 For this is the statement of the promise: At this time I will come, and Sarah will have a son.(G)[e] 10 And not only that,(H) but also Rebekah received a promise when she became pregnant[f](I) by one man, our ancestor Isaac. 11 For though her sons had not been born yet or done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to election might stand—(J) 12 not from works but from the One who calls—she was told: The older will serve the younger.(K)[g] 13 As it is written: I have loved Jacob, but I have hated Esau.(L)[h]
