Psalm 45:10-17

10 Hear this, daughter; pay close attention to what I am about to say:
    you must forget your people and even your father’s house.
11 Because the king yearns for your beauty,
    humble yourself before him, for he is now your lord.
12 The daughter of Tyre arrives with a gift;
    the wealthy will bow and plead for your favor.
13 A stunning bride, the king’s daughter waits within;
    her clothing is skillfully woven with gold.
14 She, in her richly embroidered gown, is carried to the king,
    her virgin companions following close behind.

15 They walk in a spirit of celebration and gratefulness.
    In delight, they enter the palace of the king.

16 O king, in this place where your ancestors reigned, you will have sons;
    you will make them princes throughout all the land.
17 I will make sure your name is remembered by all future generations
    so that the people will offer you thanks and praise now and forever.

Genesis 27:1-17

27 When Isaac grew old, his eyes were so bad he could see only shadows. He called his eldest son, Esau, to his side.

Isaac: My son.

Esau: I’m here.

Isaac: You see that I am growing old now. I may die any day. Take your hunting weaponry—your quiver and your bow—and go out to the field and hunt game for me. Then prepare for me some savory food, just the way I like it. Bring it to me to eat so that I may speak a blessing over you before I die.

Rebekah was listening at the doorway as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau went into the field to hunt for game to bring to his father, Rebekah called her son Jacob.

Rebekah: I heard your father say to your brother Esau, “Bring me game and prepare for me some savory food to eat, so I can bless you before the Eternal before I die.” My son, listen and do what I tell you: Go to the flock, and bring me two of the best young goats. I can prepare the savory food for your father from them. I know just how he likes it. 10 Then you take it to your father to eat so that he speaks a blessing over you before he dies.

Jacob (to Rebekah, his mother): 11 Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I have smooth skin. 12 If father reaches out and touches me, he’ll figure it out and think I’m mocking him. Then I’ll bring a curse upon myself instead of a blessing!

Rebekah: 13 If that happens, then let the curse be on me and not you. Just listen to me. Go, and get them for me.

14 Jacob went and brought the young goats to his mother, who prepared a mouth-watering meal just as his father liked it. 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes of her older son Esau, which were with her in the house, and she put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She affixed the skins of the young goats onto the back of his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she handed him the delicious food and the fresh bread she had prepared.

Romans 7:7-20

So what is the story? Is the law itself sin? Absolutely not! It is the exact opposite. I would never have known what sin is if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known that desiring something that belongs to my neighbor is sin if the law had not said, “You are not to covet.”[a] Sin took advantage of the commandment to create a constant stream of greed and desire within me; I began to want everything. You see, apart from the law, sin lies dormant. There was a time when I was living without the law, but the commandment came and changed everything: sin came to life, and I died. 10 This commandment was supposed to bring life; but in my experience, it brought death. 11 Sin took advantage of the commandment, tricked me, and exploited it in order to kill me. 12 So hear me out: the law is holy; and its commandments are holy, right, and good.

13 So did the good law bring about my death? Absolutely not! It was sin that killed me, not the law. It’s the nature of sin to produce death through what is good and exploit the commandments to multiply sin’s vile effects. 14 This is what we know: the law comes from the spiritual realm. My problem is that I am of the fallen human realm, owned by sin, which tries to keep me in its service.

God gives Israel the law as part of His covenant promises. The law does a great deal for His people; mainly it sets them apart from all other nations of the world and gives them a blueprint for God’s will. But, according to Paul, the law cannot fix everything that is wrong with this broken world. Although the law is perfectly suited for bringing sin to the surface and exposing it, the law cannot free people from the power of sin and its evil twin, death.

15 Listen, I can’t explain my actions. Here’s why: I am not able to do the things I want; and at the same time, I do the things I despise. 16 If I am doing the things I have already decided not to do, I am agreeing with the law regarding what is good. 17 But now I am no longer the one acting—I’ve lost control—sin has taken up residence in me and is wreaking havoc. 18 I know that in me, that is, in my fallen human nature, there is nothing good. I can will myself to do something good, but that does not help me carry it out. 19 I can determine that I am going to do good, but I don’t do it; instead, I end up living out the evil that I decided not to do. 20 If I end up doing the exact thing I pledged not to do, I am no longer doing it because sin has taken up residence in me.
