114 I have loved, because the Lord will hear the voice of my prayer.

² Because he hath inclined his ear unto me: and in my days I will call upon him.

³ The sorrows of death have encompassed me: and the perils of hell have found me. I met with trouble and sorrow:

⁴ And I called upon the name of the Lord. O Lord, deliver my soul.

⁵ The Lord is merciful and just, and our God sheweth mercy.

⁶ The Lord is the keeper of little ones: I was little and he delivered me.

⁷ Turn, O my soul, into thy rest: for the Lord hath been bountiful to thee.

⁸ For he hath delivered my soul from death: my eyes from tears, my feet from falling.

⁹ I will please the Lord in the land of the living.

2 Now the Lord prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonas: and Jonas was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

² And Jonas prayed to the Lord his God out of the belly of the fish.

³ And he said: I cried out of my affliction to the Lord, and he heard me: I cried out of the belly of hell, and thou hast heard my voice.

⁴ And thou hast cast me forth into the deep in the heart of the sea, and a flood hath compassed me: all thy billows, and thy waves have passed over me.

⁵ And I said: I am cast away out of the sight of thy eyes: but yet I shall see thy holy temple again.

⁶ The waters compassed me about even to the soul: the deep hath closed me round about, the sea hath covered my head.

⁷ I went down to the lowest parts of the mountains: the bars of the earth have shut me up for ever: and thou wilt bring up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.

⁸ When my soul was in distress within me, I remembered the Lord: that my prayer may come to thee, unto thy holy temple.

⁹ They that are vain observe vanities, forsake their own mercy.

¹⁰ But I with the voice of praise will sacrifice to thee: I will pay whatsoever I have vowed for my salvation to the Lord.

¹¹ And the Lord spoke to the fish: and it vomited out Jonas upon the dry land.

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying: Master we would see a sign from thee.

³⁹ Who answering said to them: An evil and adulterous generation seeketh a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.

⁴⁰ For as Jonas was in the whale's belly three days and three nights: so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

⁴¹ The men of Ninive shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas. And behold a greater than Jonas here.

⁴² The queen of the south shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold a greater than Solomon here.
