23 On the first day of the week, a psalm for David. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof: the world, and all they that dwell therein.

² For he hath founded it upon the seas; and hath prepared it upon the rivers.

³ Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord: or who shall stand in his holy place?

⁴ The innocent in hands, and clean of heart, who hath not taken his soul in vain, nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbour.

⁵ He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, and mercy from God his Saviour.

⁶ This is the generation of them that seek him, of them that seek the face of the God of Jacob.

⁷ Lift up your gates, O ye princes, and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: and the King of Glory shall enter in.

⁸ Who is this King of Glory? the Lord who is strong and mighty: the Lord mighty in battle.

⁹ Lift up your gates, O ye princes, and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: and the King of Glory shall enter in.

¹⁰ Who is this King of Glory? the Lord of hosts, he is the King of Glory.

²² And Samuel said: Doth the Lord desire holocausts and victims, and not rather that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifices: and to hearken rather than to offer the fat of rams.

²³ Because it is like the sin of witchcraft, to rebel: and like the crime of idolatry, to refuse to obey. Forasmuch therefore as thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, the Lord hath also rejected thee from being king.

²⁴ And Saul said to Samuel: I have sinned because I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words, fearing the people, and obeying their voice.

²⁵ But now bear, I beseech thee, my sin, and return with me, that I may adore the Lord.

²⁶ And Samuel said to Saul: I will not return with thee, because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

²⁷ And Samuel turned about to go away: but he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

²⁸ And Samuel said to him: The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to thy neighbour who is better than thee.

²⁹ But the triumpher in Israel will riot spare, and will not be moved to repentance: for he is not a mail that he should repent.

³⁰ Then he said: I have sinned: yet honour me now before the ancients of my people, and before Israel, and return with me, that I may adore the Lord thy God.

³¹ So Samuel turned again after Saul: and Saul adored the Lord.

5 Be ye therefore followers of God, as most dear children;

² And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odour of sweetness.

³ But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becometh saints:

⁴ Or obscenity, or foolish talking, or scurrility, which is to no purpose; but rather giving of thanks.

⁵ For know you this and understand, that no fornicator, or unclean, or covetous person (which is a serving of idols), hath inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

⁶ Let no man deceive you with vain words. For because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the children of unbelief.

⁷ Be ye not therefore partakers with them.

⁸ For you were heretofore darkness, but now light in the Lord. Walk then as children of the light.

⁹ For the fruit of the light is in all goodness, and justice, and truth;
