Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
The Lord, the Psalmist’s Shepherd.
A Psalm of David.
23 The Lord is my (A)shepherd,
I [a]shall (B)not want.
2 He makes me lie down in (C)green pastures;
He (D)leads me beside [b](E)quiet waters.
3 He (F)restores my soul;
He (G)guides me in the [c](H)paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Even though I (I)walk through the [d]valley of the shadow of death,
I (J)fear no [e]evil, for (K)You are with me;
Your (L)rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You (M)prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You [f]have (N)anointed my head with oil;
My (O)cup overflows.
6 [g]Surely (P)goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will [h](Q)dwell in the house of the Lord [i]forever.
Samuel Rebukes Saul
10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying, 11 “(A)I regret that I have made Saul king, for (B)he has turned back from [a]following Me and has not carried out My commands.” And Samuel was distressed and (C)cried out to the Lord all night. 12 Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul; and it was told Samuel, saying, “Saul came to (D)Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, then turned and proceeded on [b]down to (E)Gilgal.” 13 Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “(F)Blessed are you of the Lord! I have carried out the command of the Lord.” 14 But Samuel said, “(G)What then is this [c]bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the [d]lowing of the oxen which I hear?” 15 Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, for (H)the people spared the best of the sheep and oxen, to sacrifice to the Lord your God; but the rest we have utterly destroyed.” 16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Wait, and let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.” And he said to him, “Speak!”
17 Samuel said, “Is it not true, (I)though you were little in your own eyes, you were made the head of the tribes of Israel? And the Lord anointed you king over Israel, 18 and the Lord sent you on a [e]mission, and said, ‘(J)Go and utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are exterminated.’ 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord, (K)but rushed upon the spoil and did what was evil in the sight of the Lord?”
20 Then Saul said to Samuel, “(L)I did obey the voice of the Lord, and went on the [f]mission on which the Lord sent me, and have brought back Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 But (M)the people took some of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the choicest of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”
25 Therefore, (A)laying aside falsehood, (B)speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are (C)members of one another. 26 (D)Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not (E)give the devil [a]an opportunity. 28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather (F)he must labor, (G)performing with his own hands what is good, (H)so that he will have something to share with [b]one who has need. 29 Let no [c](I)unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for (J)edification [d]according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 (K)Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, [e]by whom you were (L)sealed for the day of redemption. 31 (M)Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be (N)put away from you, along with all (O)malice. 32 (P)Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, (Q)just as God in Christ also has forgiven [f]you.
