58 Cry, cease not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their wicked doings, and the house of Jacob their sins.

² For they seek me from day to day, sad desire to know my ways, as a nation that hath done justice, and hath not forsaken the judgment of their God: they ask of me the judgments of justice: they are willing to approach to God.

³ Why have we fasted, and thou hast not regarded: have we humbled our souls, and thou hast not taken notice? Behold in the day of your fast your own will is found, and you exact of all your debtors.

⁴ Behold you fast for debates and strife. and strike with the fist wickedly. Do not fast as you have done until this day, to make your cry to be heard on high.

⁵ Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man to afflict his soul for a day? is this it, to wind his head about like a circle, and to spread sackcloth and ashes? wilt thou call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord?

⁶ Is not this rather the fast that I have chosen? loose the bands of wickedness, undo the bundles that oppress, let them that are broken go free, and break asunder every burden.

⁷ Deal thy bread to the hungry, and bring the needy and the harbourless into thy house: when thou shalt see one naked, cover him, and despise not thy own flesh.

⁸ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy health shall speedily arise, and thy justice shall go before thy face, and the glory of the Lord shall gather thee up.

⁹ Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall hear: thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou wilt take away the chain out of the midst of thee, and cease to stretch out the finger, and to speak that which profiteth not.

¹² And the places that have been desolate for ages shall be built in thee: thou shalt raise up the foundations of generation and generation: and thou shalt be called the repairer of the fences, turning the paths into rest.

112 Praise the Lord, ye children: praise ye the name of the Lord.

² Blessed be the name of the Lord, from henceforth now and for ever.

³ From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, the name of the Lord is worthy of praise.

⁴ The Lord is high above all nations; and his glory above the heavens.

⁵ Who is as the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high:

⁶ And looketh down on the low things in heaven and in earth?

⁷ Raising up the needy from the earth, and lifting up the poor out of the dunghill:

⁸ That he may place him with princes, with the princes of his people.

⁹ Who maketh a barren woman to dwell in a house, the joyful mother of children.

2 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not in loftiness of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of Christ.

² For I judged not myself to know anything among you, but Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

³ And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

⁴ And my speech and my preaching was not in the persuasive words of human wisdom, but in shewing of the Spirit and power;

⁵ That your faith might not stand on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

⁶ Howbeit we speak wisdom among the perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, neither of the princes of this world that come to nought;

⁷ But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, a wisdom which is hidden, which God ordained before the world, unto our glory:

⁸ Which none of the princes of this world knew; for if they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.

⁹ But, as it is written: That eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man, what things God hath prepared for them that love him.

¹⁰ But to us God hath revealed them, by this Spirit. For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

¹¹ For what man knoweth the things of a man, but the spirit of a man that is in him? So the things also that are of God no man knoweth, but the Spirit of God.

¹² Now we have received not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit that is of God; that we may know the things that are given us from God.

¹³ Which things also we speak, not in the learned words of human wisdom; but in the doctrine of the Spirit, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

¹⁴ But the sensual man perceiveth not these things that are of the Spirit of God; for it is foolishness to him, and he cannot understand, because it is spiritually examined.

¹⁵ But the spiritual man judgeth all things; and he himself is judged of no man.

¹⁶ For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that we may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

¹³ You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.

¹⁴ You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.

¹⁵ Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.

¹⁶ So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

¹⁷ Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

¹⁸ For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.

¹⁹ He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

²⁰ For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
