Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 142
A Cry of Distress
A Maskil of David. When he was in the cave.(A) A prayer.
1 I cry aloud to the Lord;(B)
I plead aloud to the Lord for mercy.(C)
2 I pour out my complaint before him;
I reveal my trouble to him.(D)
3 Although my spirit is weak within me,
you know my way.(E)
Along this path I travel
they have hidden a trap for me.(F)
4 Look to the right and see:[a]
no one stands up for me;
there is no refuge for me;
no one cares about me.(G)
5 I cry to you, Lord;
I say, “You are my shelter,
my portion in the land of the living.”(H)
6 Listen to my cry,
for I am very weak.(I)
Rescue me from those who pursue me,
for they are too strong for me.(J)
7 Free me from prison
so that I can praise your name.
The righteous will gather around me
because you deal generously with me.(K)
12 Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed
and founds a town with injustice!(A)
13 Is it not from the Lord of Armies
that the peoples labor only to fuel the fire
and countries exhaust themselves for nothing?(B)
14 For the earth will be filled
with the knowledge of the Lord’s glory,
as the water covers the sea.(C)
15 Woe to him who gives his neighbors drink,
pouring out your wrath[a]
and even making them drunk,
in order to look at their nakedness!
16 You will be filled with disgrace instead of glory.
You also—drink,
and expose your uncircumcision![b]
The cup in the Lord’s right hand
will come around to you,
and utter disgrace will cover your glory.(D)
17 For your violence against Lebanon
will overwhelm you;
the destruction of animals will terrify you[c]
because of your human bloodshed and violence
against lands, cities, and all who live in them.
18 What use is a carved idol
after its craftsman carves it?
It is only a cast image, a teacher of lies.
For the one who crafts its shape trusts in it
and makes worthless idols that cannot speak.
19 Woe to him who says to wood: Wake up!
or to mute stone: Come alive!
Can it teach?
Look! It may be plated with gold and silver,
yet there is no breath(E) in it at all.
Church Discipline
9 I wrote to you in a letter not to associate(A) with sexually immoral people.(B) 10 I did not mean the immoral people of this world or the greedy(C) and swindlers(D) or idolaters; otherwise you would have to leave the world.(E) 11 But actually, I wrote[a] you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister(F) and is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard(G) or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. 12 For what business is it of mine to judge(H) outsiders? Don’t you judge those who are inside? 13 God judges outsiders. Remove the evil person from among you.[b](I)
