Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
מ (Mem)
97 O how I love your law!
All day long I meditate on it.
98 Your commandments[a] make me wiser than my enemies,
for I am always aware of them.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your rules.
100 I am more discerning than those older than I,
for I observe your precepts.
101 I stay away[b] from every evil path,
so that I might keep your instructions.[c]
102 I do not turn aside from your regulations,
for you teach me.
103 Your words are sweeter
in my mouth than honey![d]
104 Your precepts give me discernment.
Therefore I hate all deceitful actions.[e]
16 Then the officials and all the people rendered their verdict to the priests and the prophets. They said,[a] “This man should not be condemned to die.[b] For he has spoken to us under the authority of the Lord our God.”[c] 17 Then some of the elders of Judah[d] stepped forward and spoke to all the people gathered there. They said, 18 “Micah from Moresheth[e] prophesied during the time Hezekiah was king of Judah.[f] He told all the people of Judah, ‘The Lord of Heaven’s Armies[g] says,
“‘Zion[h] will become a plowed field.
Jerusalem will become a pile of rubble.
The temple mount will become a mere wooded ridge.”’[i]
19 “King Hezekiah and all the people of Judah did not put him to death, did they? Did not Hezekiah show reverence for the Lord and seek the Lord’s favor?[j] Did not[k] the Lord forgo destroying them[l] as he threatened he would? But we are on the verge of bringing great disaster on ourselves.”[m]
20 Now there was another man[n] who prophesied as the Lord’s representative[o] against this city and this land just as Jeremiah did. His name was Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath Jearim.[p] 21 When King Jehoiakim and all his bodyguards[q] and officials heard what he was prophesying,[r] the king sought to have him executed. But Uriah found out about it and fled to Egypt out of fear.[s] 22 However, King Jehoiakim sent some men to Egypt, including Elnathan son of Achbor,[t] 23 and they brought Uriah back from there.[u] They took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him executed and had his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.[v]
24 However, Ahikam son of Shaphan[w] used his influence to keep Jeremiah from being handed over and executed by the people.[x]
Dealing with False Teachers
14 Remind people[a] of these things and solemnly charge them[b] before the Lord[c] not to wrangle over words. This is of no benefit; it just brings ruin on those who listen.[d] 15 Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the message of truth accurately.[e] 16 But avoid profane chatter,[f] because those occupied with it will stray further and further into ungodliness,[g] 17 and their message will spread its infection[h] like gangrene. Hymenaeus and Philetus are in this group.[i] 18 They have strayed from the truth[j] by saying that the resurrection has already occurred, and they are undermining some people’s faith. 19 However, God’s solid foundation remains standing, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,”[k] and “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord[l] must turn away from evil.”
20 Now in a wealthy home[m] there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also ones made of wood and of clay, and some are for honorable use, but others for ignoble use.[n] 21 So if someone cleanses himself of such behavior,[o] he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart, useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. 22 But keep away from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faithfulness, love, and peace, in company with others[p] who call on the Lord from a pure heart.[q] 23 But reject foolish and ignorant[r] controversies, because you know they breed infighting.[s] 24 And the Lord’s slave[t] must not engage in heated disputes[u] but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient, 25 correcting[v] opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth[w] 26 and they will come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap where they are held captive[x] to do his will.[y]
