Psalm 102:1-17

Psalm 102

The Afflicted Ruler

Heading
A prayer for an afflicted person who is weary and pours out his complaints before the Lord.

Opening Plea

O Lord, hear my prayer,
and let my cry for help come to you.
Do not hide your face from me on the day when I am distressed.
Turn your ear to me on the day I call.
Hurry! Answer me!

The Shortness of His Days

For my days go up in smoke,
and my bones are burned like hot coals.
My heart is cut down and withered like grass,
so I forget to eat my food.
Because of the sound of my groaning, my bones stick out of my flesh.
I am like an owl in the wilderness,
like a screech owl[a] among the ruins.
I lie awake.
I have become like a lonely bird on a roof.
All day long my enemies taunt me.
Those who ridicule me use my name as a curse,
because I eat ashes like bread,
and I mix tears with my drinks.
10 Because of your rage and your wrath,
you have picked me up and thrown me away.
11 My days are being stretched out like a shadow,
and I am dried up like grass.

God’s Endless Years

12 But you, Lord, sit on your throne forever,
and you will be remembered through all generations.
13 You will rise and have compassion on Zion.
Yes, it is time to be gracious to her,
because the appointed time has come.
14 Yes, your servants will show favor to her stones,
and they will have compassion on her dust.
15 Then the nations will fear the name of the Lord,
and all the kings of the earth will fear your glory.
16 For the Lord will rebuild Zion.
He will appear in his glory.
17 He will respond to the prayer of the naked.
He will not despise their prayer.

Jeremiah 25:15-32

The Cup of God’s Wrath

15 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath, and make all the nations, to whom I send you, drink it. 16 They will drink, stagger, and go mad because of the sword that I will send among them.”

17 So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand and made all the nations to whom he had sent me drink from it— 18 to destroy them and to make them an object of horror and derision, and to make them a curse, as they are today. They are:

Jerusalem, all the cities of Judah, its kings and officials,
19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, and all his people,
20 also all the various foreigners there,
also all the kings of the land of Uz,
all the kings of the Philistines (Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and
    the remnant of Ashdod),
21 Edom, Moab, and the Ammonites,
22 all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon,
and the kings of the islands across the sea,
23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who live on the edge of the desert,[a]
24 all the kings of Arabia,
all the kings of the various peoples who live in the wilderness,
25 all the kings of Zimri,
all the kings of Elam, all the kings of the Medes,
26 all the kings of the north, far and near, one after another,
and all the kingdoms of the world which are on the face of the earth.

Then after them, the king of Sheshak[b] will drink.

27 You are to tell them that this is what the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Drink and get drunk. Vomit! Fall and rise no more, because of the sword I will send among you.” 28 But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink, then tell them, “This is what the Lord of Armies says. You must drink it. 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster to the city called by my name. Will you somehow go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I will call for a sword on all who live on the earth, declares the Lord of Armies.”

30 Prophesy all these words against them. Say to them:
The Lord will roar from on high,
and he will thunder from his holy dwelling.
He will roar mightily against his flock.
He will shout against all who live on the earth,
like those who tread grapes.
31 The roaring will reach the ends of the earth,
for the Lord will bring charges against the nations.
He will judge all flesh
and put the wicked to the sword, declares the Lord.
32 This is what the Lord of Armies says.
Look! Disaster is moving from nation to nation,
and a great storm is rising from the ends of the earth.

Matthew 10:5-15

Jesus sent these twelve out and commanded them, “Do not go among the Gentiles, and do not enter any town of the Samaritans. Go instead to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near!’ Heal the sick. Raise the dead. Cleanse lepers. Drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. Do not take gold, silver, or bronze in your money belts. 10 Do not take a bag for the journey, or two coats, sandals, or a staff, because the worker deserves his support. 11 Whenever you enter a town or village, find out who is worthy and stay there until you leave. 12 As you enter the household, give it your greeting. 13 If the household is worthy, let your peace rest on it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone does not receive you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet as you leave that house or that town. 15 Amen I tell you: It will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
