Psalm 139:1-6

Psalm 139

The All-Knowing, Ever-Present God

For the choir director. A psalm of David.

Lord, you have searched me and known me.(A)
You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
you understand my thoughts from far away.(B)
You observe my travels and my rest;
you are aware of all my ways.(C)
Before a word is on my tongue,
you know all about it, Lord.(D)
You have encircled me;
you have placed your hand on me.(E)
This wondrous knowledge is beyond me.
It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.(F)

Psalm 139:13-18

13 For it was you who created my inward parts;[a]
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.(A)
14 I will praise you
because I have been remarkably and wondrously made.[b][c]
Your works are wondrous,
and I know this very well.(B)
15 My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.(C)
16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in your book and planned
before a single one of them began.(D)

17 God, how precious[d] your thoughts are to me;
how vast their sum is!
18 If I counted them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand;(E)
when I wake up,[e] I am still with you.(F)

Jeremiah 15:10-21

Jeremiah’s Complaint

10 Woe is me, my mother,
that you gave birth to me,(A)
a man who incites dispute and conflict
in all the land.
I did not lend or borrow,
yet everyone curses me.(B)

The Lord’s Response

11 The Lord said:

Haven’t I set you loose for your good?
Haven’t I punished you
in a time of trouble,
in a time of distress with the enemy?[a]

12 Can anyone smash iron,
iron from the north, or bronze?

13 I will give up your wealth
and your treasures as plunder,
without cost,(C) for all your sins
in all your borders.
14 Then I will make you serve your enemies[b]
in a land you do not know,
for my anger will kindle a fire
that will burn against you.(D)

Jeremiah’s Prayer for Vengeance

15 You know,(E) Lord;
remember me and take note of me.(F)
Avenge me against my persecutors.(G)
In your patience,[c] don’t take me away.
Know that I suffer disgrace for your honor.(H)
16 Your words were found, and I ate them.(I)
Your words became a delight to me
and the joy of my heart,
for I bear your name,(J)
Lord God of Armies.
17 I never sat with the band of revelers,
and I did not celebrate with them.
Because your hand was on me, I sat alone,(K)
for you filled me with indignation.
18 Why has my pain become unending,
my wound incurable,(L)
refusing to be healed?
You truly have become like a mirage to me—
water that is not reliable.

Jeremiah Told to Repent

19 Therefore, this is what the Lord says:

If you return, I will take you back;
you will stand in my presence.
And if you speak noble words,
rather than worthless ones,
you will be my spokesman.(M)
It is they who must return to you;
you must not return to them.
20 Then I will make you a fortified wall of bronze
to this people.
They will fight against you
but will not overcome you,
for I am with you
to save you and rescue you.(N)
This is the Lord’s declaration.

21 I will rescue you from the power of evil people
and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.

Philippians 2:25-30

25 But I considered it necessary to send you Epaphroditus(A)—my brother, coworker, and fellow soldier, as well as your messenger and minister to my need(B) 26 since he has been longing for all of you and was distressed because you heard that he was sick. 27 Indeed, he was so sick that he nearly died. However, God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 For this reason, I am very eager to send him so that you may rejoice again when you see him and I may be less anxious. 29 Therefore, welcome him in the Lord with great joy and hold people like him in honor, 30 because he came close to death for the work(C) of Christ, risking his life to make up what was lacking in your ministry to me.
