Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
ג Gimel
17 Deal generously with your servant(A)
so that I might live;
then I will keep your word.
18 Open my eyes so that I may contemplate
wondrous things from your instruction.
19 I am a resident alien on earth;(B)
do not hide your commands from me.
20 I am continually overcome
with longing for your judgments.(C)
21 You rebuke the arrogant,
the ones under a curse,(D)
who wander from your commands.(E)
22 Take insult and contempt away from me,(F)
for I have kept your decrees.
23 Though princes sit together speaking against me,(G)
your servant will think about your statutes;(H)
24 your decrees are my delight
and my counselors.(I)
ד Daleth
25 My life is down in the dust;(J)
give me life(K) through your word.
26 I told you about my life,
and you answered me;
teach me your statutes.(L)
27 Help me understand
the meaning of your precepts
so that I can meditate on your wonders.(M)
28 I am weary[a] from grief;
strengthen me through your word.(N)
29 Keep me from the way of deceit
and graciously give me your instruction.
30 I have chosen the way of truth;
I have set your ordinances before me.(O)
31 I cling to your decrees;
Lord, do not put me to shame.(P)
32 I pursue the way of your commands,
for you broaden my understanding.[b](Q)
5 The Lord, the God of Armies—
he touches the earth;(A)
it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn;
all of it rises like the Nile
and subsides like the Nile of Egypt.(B)
6 He builds his upper chambers
in the heavens(C)
and lays the foundation of his vault
on the earth.(D)
He summons the water of the sea
and pours it out over the surface of the earth.(E)
The Lord is his name.(F)
Announcement of Judgment
7 Israelites, are you not like the Cushites to me?(G)
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Didn’t I bring Israel from the land of Egypt,
the Philistines from Caphtor,[a](H)
and the Arameans from Kir?(I)
8 Look, the eyes of the Lord God
are on the sinful kingdom,(J)
and I will obliterate it
from the face of the earth.(K)
However, I will not totally destroy
the house of Jacob(L)—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
9 for I am about to give the command,
and I will shake the house of Israel(M)
among all the nations,
as one shakes a sieve,
but not a pebble will fall to the ground.
10 All the sinners among my people(N)
who say, “Disaster will never overtake[b]
or confront us,”(O)
will die by the sword.
Announcement of Restoration
11 In that day
I will restore the fallen shelter(P) of David:(Q)
I will repair its gaps,
restore its ruins,(R)
and rebuild it as in the days of old,(S)
12 so that they may possess
the remnant of Edom(T)
and all the nations
that bear my name[c](U)—
this is the declaration of the Lord; he will do this.
13 Look, the days are coming—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
when the plowman will overtake the reaper(V)
and the one who treads grapes,
the sower of seed.
The mountains will drip with sweet wine,
and all the hills will flow with it.(W)
14 I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel.[d](X)
They will rebuild and occupy ruined cities,(Y)
plant vineyards and drink their wine,
make gardens and eat their produce.(Z)
15 I will plant them on their land,
and they will never again be uprooted
from the land I have given them.(AA)
The Lord your God has spoken.
41 Therefore the Jews started grumbling about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They were saying, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph,(A) whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
43 Jesus answered them, “Stop grumbling among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws[a] him, and I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: (B) And they will all be taught by God.[b](C) Everyone who has listened to and learned from the Father(D) comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father(E) except the one who is from God.(F) He has seen the Father.(G)
47 “Truly I tell you, anyone who believes[c] has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna(H) in the wilderness,(I) and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die.(J) 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live(K) forever.(L) The bread that I will give for the life(M) of the world is my flesh.”(N)
