Psalm 75

God the Judge

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A psalm of Asaph [C a Levitical musician, a descendant of Gershon, at the time of David; 1 Chr. 6:39; 15:17; 2 Chr. 5:12]. A song.

75 God, we ·thank [praise] you;
    we ·thank [praise] you because ·you [L your name] are near.
We tell about the ·miracles [wonders] you do.

You say, “I set ·the time for trial [L an appointed time],
    and I will judge ·fairly [with integrity].
The earth with all its people may ·shake [totter],
    but I ·am the one who holds it steady [L set/establish its pillars; C the idea was that the earth was supported by pillars]. ·Selah [Interlude]
I say to those who ·are proud [brag; boast], ‘Don’t ·be proud [brag; boast],’
    and to the wicked, ‘Don’t ·show your power [L exalt your horn; C a horn is a symbol of strength].
Don’t ·try to use your power [L exalt your horn] against ·heaven [L the heights; or on high].
    Don’t ·be stubborn [L speak with an insolent neck].’”

No one from the east or the west
    or the ·desert [wilderness] ·can judge you [comes exalting].
God is the judge;
    he ·judges one person as guilty [L puts one down] and ·another as innocent [L raises another up].
The Lord holds a cup in his hand;
    it is ·full of wine mixed with [foaming wine full of] spices [C the cup of God’s wrath; 60:3; Jer. 25:15–29; Nah. 3:11; Matt. 26:39].
He pours it out ·even to the last drop [until its dregs drain out],
    and the wicked drink it all.

I will tell about this forever;
    I will ·sing praise [make a psalm] to the God of Jacob.
10 ·He will take all power away from [L I will cut off all the horns of] the wicked [v. 4],
    but the ·power [L horn] of ·good [righteous] people will ·grow [be exalted].

2 Kings 4:1-7

A Widow Asks Elisha for Help

The wife of a man from the ·groups [company; brotherhood; L sons] of prophets said to Elisha, “Your servant, my husband, is dead. You know he ·honored [revered; feared] the Lord. But now ·the man he owes money to [a creditor] is coming to take my two boys as his slaves!”

Elisha answered, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”

The woman said, “I don’t have anything there except a ·pot [jar; flask] of oil.”

Then Elisha said, “Go and get empty jars from all your neighbors. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go into your house and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and set the full ones aside.”

So she left Elisha and shut the door behind her and her sons. As they brought the jars to her, she poured out the oil. When the jars were all full, she said to her son, “Bring me another jar.”

But he said, “There are no more jars.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

She went and told Elisha. And the prophet said to her, “Go, sell the oil and pay ·what you owe [your debts]. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

Matthew 10:16-25

Jesus Warns His Apostles(A)

16 “·Listen [L Look; T Behold], I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as ·clever [wise; shrewd; cunning] as ·snakes [serpents] and as ·innocent [harmless] as doves. 17 ·Be careful of [Beware of; Watch out for] people, because they will ·arrest you and take you to court [hand you over to the courts/councils; C local councils associated with Jewish synagogues] and ·whip [flog; scourge] you in their synagogues. 18 ·Because of me [On my account; For my sake] you will be taken to stand before governors and kings, ·and you will tell them and the Gentiles about me [L as a witness/testimony to them and to the Gentiles]. 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about what to say or how to say it. [L For] At that time you will be given the things to say. 20 It will not really be you speaking but the Spirit of your Father speaking ·through [in] you.

21 “Brothers will ·give [betray; hand over] their own brothers to ·be killed [death], and fathers will give their own children to ·be killed [death]. Children will ·fight [rebel; rise up] against their own parents and have them put to death. 22 All people will hate you because ·you follow me [L of my name], but those people who ·keep their faith [endure; stand firm; persevere] until the end will be saved. 23 When you are ·treated badly [persecuted] in one city, ·run [flee] to ·another city [the next]. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes [Dan. 7:13–14].

24 “A ·student [disciple; follower] is not ·better than [superior to; L above] his teacher, and a ·servant [slave] is not ·better than [superior to; L above] his ·master [lord]. 25 ·A student should be satisfied [L It is enough for a student/disciple/follower] to become like his teacher; ·a servant should be satisfied to become [L and a servant/slave] like his master. If the head of the family [C here referring to Jesus] is called Beelzebul [C another name for Satan], ·then the other members of the family will be called worse names [L how much more the members of his household]!
