Psalm 56

Psalm 56

For the Music Director. To the melody of “Silent Dove at a Distance.” A Miktam of David, when the Philistines seized him in Gath.

Be gracious to me, O God, for man would crush me;
    all day long he who battles oppresses me.
All day long my enemies would crush me,
    for there are many who arrogantly battle against me.

In the day when I am afraid,
    I will trust in You.
In God whose word I praise,
    in God I have trusted; I will not fear.
    What can mere flesh do to me?

Every day they twist my words;
    all their thoughts are against me for evil.
They stir up strife, they lurk,
    they watch my steps,
    when they wait for my life.
Should there be deliverance for them on account of wickedness?
    In Your anger cast down the peoples, O God.

You take account of my wandering;
    put my tears in Your bottle;
    are they not in Your book?
In the day I cry to You,
    then my enemies will turn back;
    this I know, that God is for me.

10 In God whose word I praise,
    in the Lord whose word I praise,
11 in God I trust, I will not fear;
    what can a man do to me?

12 Your vows are on me, O God;
    I will complete them with thank offerings to You;
13 for You have delivered my soul from death,
    even my feet from stumbling,
to walk before God
    in the light of the living.

Jeremiah 1:11-19

The Almond Rod and Boiling Pot

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?”

And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”

12 Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well. For I will hasten My word to perform it.”

13 The word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?”

And I said, “I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north.”

14 Then the Lord said to me: Out of the north calamity will break forth on all the inhabitants of the land. 15 For I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, says the Lord.

And they will come and they will set each one his throne
    at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem,
and against all the walls all around,
    and against all the cities of Judah.
16 I will utter My judgments against them
    concerning all their wickedness, whereby they have forsaken Me
and have burned incense to other gods,
    and have worshipped the works of their own hands.

17 You therefore gird up your loins and arise, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be dismayed at their faces, lest I confound you before them. 18 For indeed, I have made you this day a fortified city and an iron pillar and bronze walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the officials, against the priests, and against the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you, but they will not prevail against you, for I am with you, says the Lord, to deliver you.

Luke 19:41-44

41 When He came near, He beheld the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you, even you, had known even today what things would bring you peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you and surround you, and press you in on every side. 44 They will dash you, and your children within you, to the ground. They will not leave one stone upon another within you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
