Isaiah 11:1-9

The Reign of the Davidic King

11 “A shoot will come out
    from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch will bear fruit
    from his roots.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and power,
the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.
His delight will be in the fear of the Lord.
He won’t judge by what his eyes see,
nor decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
    and decide with equity for[a] earth’s poor.[b]
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,[c]
and the wicked will be killed[d] with the breath of his lips.
Righteousness will be the sash around his loins,
and faithfulness the belt around his waist.”

A Transformed Ecology

“The wolf will live with the lamb;
the leopard will lie down with the young goat.
The calf and the lion will graze[e] together,
and a little child will lead them.
The cow and the bear will graze,
and[f] their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child will play
over the hole of the cobra,
and the weaned child will put his hand on vipers’ dens.[g]
They will neither harm nor destroy
    on[h] my holy mountain;
for the earth will be full
of the knowledge[i] of the Lord,[j]
as the waters cover the sea.”

Micah 4:8-13

Zion’s Captivity

“And you, watchtower of the flock,
you stronghold of the daughter of Zion,
it will happen even to you:
The former dominion, even the kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem, will come.
Why are you crying so loud now?
There’s no king among you, is there?
Perhaps your advisor has died?
For pain has overtaken you like a woman in labor.
10 Be in pain! Be in labor, you daughter of Zion,
like a woman about to give birth,
because now you will depart from the city,
    living in the open fields.
To Babylon you will go.
    There you will be delivered,
there the Lord will rescue you from the power[a] of your enemies.”

The Nations Despise Zion

11 “Now many nations have gathered against you, saying,
    ‘Let her be defiled,’ and
        ‘Let’s look down on Zion.’
12 But they don’t know the thoughts of the Lord,
and they don’t understand his tactics,
for he will gather them like harvested grain to his threshing floor.
13 Get up and smash[b] them to pieces, daughter of Zion,
because I will make your horn like iron
        and your hooves like bronze!
And you will beat many people to pieces,
and I will consecrate their dishonest[c] gain to the Lord
and their assets to the Lord of the entire earth.”

Luke 7:31-35

31 Jesus continued,[a] “To what may I compare the people living today?[b] 32 They’re like little children who sit in the marketplace and shout to each other,

‘A wedding song we played for you,
the dance you all did scorn.
A woeful dirge we chanted, too,
but then you would not mourn.’

33 Because John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, yet you say, ‘He has a demon!’ 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look! He’s[c] a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 35 Wisdom is vindicated by all[d] her children.”
