Psalm 55:1-15

The Prayer of Someone Betrayed by a Friend[a]

55 Hear my prayer, O God;
    don't turn away from my plea!
Listen to me and answer me;
    I am worn out by my worries.
I am terrified by the threats of my enemies,
    crushed by the oppression of the wicked.
They bring trouble on me;
    they are angry with me and hate me.

I am terrified,
    and the terrors of death crush me.
I am gripped by fear and trembling;
    I am overcome with horror.
I wish I had wings like a dove.
    I would fly away and find rest.
I would fly far away
    and make my home in the desert.
I would hurry and find myself a shelter
    from the raging wind and the storm.
Confuse the speech of my enemies, O Lord!

I see violence and riots in the city,
10     surrounding it day and night,
    filling it with crime and trouble.
11 There is destruction everywhere;
    the streets are full of oppression and fraud.

12 If it were an enemy making fun of me,
    I could endure it;
if it were an opponent boasting over me,
    I could hide myself from him.
13 But it is you, my companion,
    my colleague and close friend.
14 We had intimate talks with each other
    and worshiped together in the Temple.
15 May my enemies die before their time;
    may they go down alive into the world of the dead!
Evil is in their homes and in their hearts.

Job 11

11 1-2 Will no one answer all this nonsense?
    Does talking so much put you in the right?
Job, do you think we can't answer you?
    That your mocking words will leave us speechless?
You claim that what you say is true;
    you claim you are pure in the sight of God.
How I wish God would answer you!
He would tell you there are many sides to wisdom;
    there are things too deep for human knowledge.
God is punishing you less than you deserve.

Can you discover the limits and bounds
    of the greatness and power of God?
The sky is no limit for God,
    but it lies beyond your reach.
God knows the world of the dead,
    but you do not know it.
God's greatness is broader than the earth,
    wider than the sea.
10 If God arrests you and brings you to trial,
    who is there to stop him?
11 God knows which people are worthless;
    he sees all their evil deeds.
12 Stupid people will start being wise
    when wild donkeys are born tame.

13 Put your heart right, Job. Reach out to God.
14 Put away evil and wrong from your home.
15 Then face the world again, firm and courageous.
16 Then all your troubles will fade from your memory,
    like floods that are past and remembered no more.
17 Your life will be brighter than sunshine at noon,
    and life's darkest hours will shine like the dawn.
18 You will live secure and full of hope;
    God will protect you and give you rest.
19 You won't be afraid of your enemies;
    many people will ask you for help.
20 But the wicked will look around in despair
    and find that there is no way to escape.
Their one hope is that death will come.

1 Corinthians 7:10-16

10 (A)For married people I have a command which is not my own but the Lord's: a wife must not leave her husband; 11 but if she does, she must remain single or else be reconciled to her husband; and a husband must not divorce his wife.

12 To the others I say (I, myself, not the Lord): if a Christian man has a wife who is an unbeliever and she agrees to go on living with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a Christian woman is married to a man who is an unbeliever and he agrees to go on living with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is made acceptable to God by being united to his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made acceptable to God by being united to her Christian husband. If this were not so, their children would be like pagan children; but as it is, they are acceptable to God. 15 However, if the one who is not a believer wishes to leave the Christian partner, let it be so. In such cases the Christian partner, whether husband or wife, is free to act. God has called you to live in peace. 16 How can you be sure, Christian wife, that you will not save[a] your husband? Or how can you be sure, Christian husband, that you will not save[b] your wife?
