Psalm 11

Psalm 11[a]

Confidence in the Presence of God

For the leader. Of David.

I

In the Lord I take refuge;
    how can you say to me,
    “Flee like a bird to the mountains!(A)
See how the wicked string their bows,
    fit their arrows to the string
    to shoot from the shadows at the upright of heart.(B)
[b]If foundations are destroyed,
    what can the just one do?”

II

The Lord is in his holy temple;
    the Lord’s throne is in heaven.(C)
God’s eyes keep careful watch;
    they test the children of Adam.
The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked,
    hates those who love violence,
And rains upon the wicked
    fiery coals and brimstone,
    a scorching wind their allotted cup.[c](D)
The Lord is just and loves just deeds;
    the upright will see his face.

1 Kings 5:13-18

13 He spoke of plants, from the cedar on Lebanon to the hyssop growing out of the wall, and he spoke about beasts, birds, reptiles, and fishes. 14 (A)People from all nations came to hear Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom.

Preparations for the Temple.[a] 15 When Hiram, king of Tyre, heard that Solomon had been anointed king in place of his father, he sent an embassy to him; for Hiram had always been David’s friend.[b] 16 Solomon sent back this message to Hiram: 17 (B)“You know that David my father, because of the wars that beset him, could not build a house for the name of the Lord his God until such time as the Lord should put his enemies under the soles of his feet. 18 But now the Lord, my God, has given me rest on all sides, without adversary or misfortune.

Ephesians 5:21-6:9

Wives and Husbands. 21 [a]Be subordinate to one another(A) out of reverence for Christ.[b] 22 Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.(B) 23 For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body.(C) 24 As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her(D) 26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,(E) 27 that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.(F) 28 So [also] husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.(G)

31 “For this reason a man shall leave [his] father and [his] mother
    and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.”(H)

32 This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.(I) 33 In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.

Chapter 6

Children and Parents. Children, obey your parents [in the Lord], for this is right.(J) “Honor your father and mother.”(K) This is the first commandment with a promise, “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up with the training and instruction of the Lord.(L)

Slaves and Masters. Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ,(M) not only when being watched, as currying favor, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,(N) willingly serving the Lord and not human beings, knowing that each will be requited from the Lord for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Masters, act in the same way toward them, and stop bullying, knowing that both they and you have a Master in heaven and that with him there is no partiality.(O)
