Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Psalm 84
For the choir director; on the gittith; a psalm by Korah’s descendants.
1 Your dwelling place is lovely, O Yahweh Tsebaoth!
2 My soul longs and yearns
for Yahweh’s courtyards.
My whole body shouts for joy to El Chay.
3 Even sparrows find a home,
and swallows find a nest for themselves.
There they hatch their young
near your altars, O Yahweh Tsebaoth,
my Melek and my Elohim.
4 Blessed are those who live in your house.
They are always praising you. Selah
5 Blessed are those who find strength in you.
Their hearts are on the road that leads to you.[a]
6 As they pass through a valley where balsam trees grow,[b]
they make it a place of springs.
The early rains cover it with blessings.[c]
7 Their strength grows as they go along
until each one of them appears
in front of Elohim in Zion.
8 O Yahweh Elohim Tsebaoth, hear my prayer.
Open your ears, O Elohim of Jacob. Selah
9 Look at our shield, O Elohim.
Look with favor on the face of your anointed one.
10 One day in your courtyards is better than a thousand anywhere else.
I would rather stand in the entrance to my Elohim’s house
than live inside wicked people’s homes.
11 Yahweh Elohim is a sun and Magen.
Yahweh grants favor and honor.
He does not hold back any blessing
from those who live innocently.
12 O Yahweh Tsebaoth, blessed is the person who trusts you.
Preparations for Building the Temple(A)
5 [a]King Hiram of Tyre sent his officials to Solomon when he heard that Solomon had been anointed king to succeed his father. Hiram had always been David’s friend.
2 Solomon sent word to Hiram, by saying, 3 “You know that my father David was surrounded by war. He couldn’t build a temple for the name of Yahweh our Elohim until Yahweh let him defeat his enemies. 4 But Yahweh my Elohim has surrounded me with peace. I have no rival and no trouble. 5 Now I’m thinking of building a temple for the name of Yahweh my Elohim as Yahweh spoke to my father David: ‘Your son, whom I will put on your throne to succeed you, will build a temple for my name.’ 6 So order men to cut down cedars from Lebanon for me. My workers will work with your workers. I will pay you whatever wages you ask for your workers. You know we don’t have any skilled lumberjacks like those from Sidon.”
7 Hiram was very glad to hear what Solomon had said. Hiram responded, “May Yahweh be praised today. He has given David a wise son to rule this great nation.”
8 Hiram sent men to Solomon to say, “I’ve received the message you sent me. I will do everything you want in regard to the cedar and cypress logs. 9 My workers will bring logs from Lebanon to the sea, and I will have them make them into rafts to go by sea to any place you specify. There I will have them taken apart, and you can use them. You can pay me by providing food for my palace.” 10 So Hiram gave Solomon all the cedar and cypress wood he wanted. 11 Solomon gave Hiram 120,000 bushels of wheat and 120,000 gallons of pure olive oil. Solomon paid Hiram this much every year.
12 Yahweh gave Solomon wisdom as he had promised. There was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and they made a treaty with one another.
The Power of Prayer(A)
5 Yeshua said to his disciples, “Suppose one of you has a friend. Suppose you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, let me borrow three loaves of bread. 6 A friend of mine on a trip has dropped in on me, and I don’t have anything to serve him.’ 7 Your friend might answer you from inside his house, ‘Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children are in bed. I can’t get up to give you anything.’ 8 I can guarantee that although he doesn’t want to get up to give you anything, he will get up and give you whatever you need because he is your friend and because you were so bold.
9 “So I tell you to ask, and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you. 10 Everyone who asks will receive. The one who searches will find, and for the person who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “If your child asks you, his father, for a fish, would you give him a snake instead? 12 Or if your child asks you for an egg, would you give him a scorpion? 13 Even though you’re evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. So how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”
