Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Praise to God for His Faithfulness and Justice
111 Praise[a] the Lord!
(A)I will praise the Lord with my whole heart,
In the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.
2 (B)The works of the Lord are great,
(C)Studied by all who have pleasure in them.
3 His work is (D)honorable and glorious,
And His righteousness endures forever.
4 He has made His wonderful works to be remembered;
(E)The Lord is gracious and full of compassion.
5 He has given food to those who fear Him;
He will ever be mindful of His covenant.
6 He has declared to His people the power of His works,
In giving them the [b]heritage of the nations.
7 The works of His hands are (F)verity[c] and justice;
All His precepts are sure.
8 (G)They stand fast forever and ever,
And are (H)done in truth and uprightness.
9 (I)He has sent redemption to His people;
He has commanded His covenant forever:
(J)Holy and awesome is His name.
10 (K)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.
His praise endures forever.
David Proclaims Solomon King(A)
28 Then King David answered and said, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king. 29 And the king took an oath and said, (B)“As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life from every distress, 30 (C)just as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place,’ so I certainly will do this day.”
31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and paid homage to the king, and said, (D)“Let my lord King David live forever!”
32 And King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king. 33 The king also said to them, (E)“Take with you the servants of your lord, and have Solomon my son ride on my own (F)mule, and take him down to (G)Gihon.[a] 34 There let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet (H)anoint him king over Israel; and (I)blow the horn, and say, [b]‘Long live King Solomon!’ 35 Then you shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne, and he shall be king in my place. For I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.”
36 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king and said, (J)“Amen! May the Lord God of my lord the king say so too. 37 (K)As the Lord has been with my lord the king, even so may He be with Solomon, and (L)make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”
38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, (M)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the (N)Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and took him to Gihon. 39 Then Zadok the priest took a horn of (O)oil from the tabernacle and (P)anointed Solomon. And they blew the horn, (Q)and all the people said, [c]“Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him; and the people played the flutes and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth seemed to split with their sound.
41 Now Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the horn, he said, “Why is the city in such a noisy uproar?” 42 While he was still speaking, there came (R)Jonathan, the son of Abiathar the priest. And Adonijah said to him, “Come in, for (S)you are a prominent man, and bring good news.”
43 Then Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, “No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites; and they have made him ride on the king’s mule. 45 So Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon; and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. 46 Also Solomon (T)sits on the throne of the kingdom. 47 And moreover the king’s servants have gone to bless our lord King David, saying, (U)‘May God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’ (V)Then the king bowed himself on the bed. 48 Also the king said thus, ‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has (W)given one to sit on my throne this day, while my eyes see (X)it!’ ”
Avoid Divisive Persons
17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those (A)who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and (B)avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord [a]Jesus Christ, but (C)their own belly, and (D)by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. 19 For (E)your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be (F)wise in what is good, and [b]simple concerning evil. 20 And (G)the God of peace (H)will crush Satan under your feet shortly.
(I)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
