Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
Folly of the Godless, and God’s Final Triumph(A)
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
14 The (B)fool has said in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good.
2 (C)The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.
3 (D)They have all turned aside,
They have together become corrupt;
There is none who does good,
No, not one.
13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 14 When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai, and entered the city. So Joab returned from the people of Ammon and went to (A)Jerusalem.
15 When the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered together. 16 Then [a]Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond [b]the River, and they came to Helam. And [c]Shobach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. 17 When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in battle array against David and fought with him. 18 Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand (B)horsemen of the Syrians, and struck Shobach the commander of their army, who died there. 19 And when all the kings who were servants to [d]Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and (C)served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the people of Ammon anymore.
31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”
34 Jesus said to them, (A)“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (B)finish His work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes (C)the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, (D)for they are already white for harvest! 36 (E)And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that (F)both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true: (G)‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; (H)others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”
