Psalm 119:113-128

Safety in the Law of the Lord

113 I hate those who are not completely loyal to you,
    but I love your law.
114 You are my defender and protector;
    I put my hope in your promise.
115 Go away from me, you sinful people.
    I will obey the commands of my God.
116 Give me strength, as you promised, and I shall live;
    don't let me be disappointed in my hope!
117 Hold me, and I will be safe,
    and I will always pay attention to your commands.
118 You reject everyone who disobeys your laws;
    their deceitful schemes are useless.
119 You treat all the wicked like rubbish,
    and so I love your instructions.
120 Because of you I am afraid;
    I am filled with fear because of your judgments.

Obedience to the Law of the Lord

121 I have done what is right and good;
    don't abandon me to my enemies!
122 Promise that you will help your servant;
    don't let the arrogant oppress me!
123 My eyes are tired from watching for your saving help,
    for the deliverance you promised.
124 Treat me according to your constant love,
    and teach me your commands.
125 I am your servant; give me understanding,
    so that I may know your teachings.
126 Lord, it is time for you to act,
    because people are disobeying your law.
127 I love your commands more than gold,
    more than the finest gold.
128 And so I follow all your instructions;[a]
    I hate all wrong ways.

1 Samuel 19:8-17

War with the Philistines broke out again. David attacked them and defeated them so thoroughly that they fled.

One day an evil spirit from the Lord took control of Saul. He was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was there, playing his harp. 10 Saul tried to pin David to the wall with his spear, but David dodged, and the spear stuck in the wall. David ran away and escaped.

11 (A)That same night Saul sent some men to watch David's house and kill him the next morning. Michal, David's wife, warned him, “If you don't get away tonight, tomorrow you will be dead.” 12 She let him down from a window, and he ran away and escaped. 13 Then she took the household idol, laid it on the bed, put a pillow made of goats' hair at its head, and put a cover over it. 14 When Saul's men came to get David, Michal told them that he was sick. 15 But Saul sent them back to see David for themselves. He ordered them, “Carry him here in his bed, and I will kill him.” 16 They went inside and found the household idol in the bed and the goats' hair pillow at its head. 17 Saul asked Michal, “Why have you tricked me like this and let my enemy escape?”

She answered, “He said he would kill me if I didn't help him escape.”

Mark 6:45-52

Jesus Walks on the Water(A)

45 At once Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to Bethsaida, on the other side of the lake, while he sent the crowd away. 46 After saying good-bye to the people, he went away to a hill to pray. 47 When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, while Jesus was alone on land. 48 He saw that his disciples were straining at the oars, because they were rowing against the wind; so sometime between three and six o'clock in the morning, he came to them, walking on the water. He was going to pass them by,[a] 49 but they saw him walking on the water. “It's a ghost!” they thought, and screamed. 50 They were all terrified when they saw him.

Jesus spoke to them at once, “Courage!” he said. “It is I. Don't be afraid!” 51 Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind died down. The disciples were completely amazed, 52 because they had not understood the real meaning of the feeding of the five thousand; their minds could not grasp it.
