Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
99 1 He commendeth the power, equity, and excellency of the kingdom of God by Christ over the Jews and Gentiles, 5 And provoketh them to magnify the same, and to serve the Lord, 6 following the example of the ancient fathers, Moses, Aaron, Samuel, who calling upon God, were heard in their prayers.
1 The Lord reigneth, let the [a]people tremble: he sitteth between the (A)Cherubims, let the earth be moved.
2 The Lord is great in Zion, and he is high above all the people.
3 They shall [b]praise thy great and fearful Name (for it is holy.)
4 And the King’s power, that loveth judgment: for thou hast prepared equity: thou hast executed judgment and justice in Jacob.
5 Exalt the Lord our God, and fall down before his [c]footstool: for he is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron were among his Priests, [d]and Samuel among such as call upon his Name: these called upon the Lord, and he heard them.
7 He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the Law that he gave them.
8 Thou heardest them, O Lord our God: thou wast a favorable God unto them, though thou didst take vengeance for [e]their inventions.
9 Exalt the Lord our God and fall down before his holy Mountain: for the Lord our God is holy.
11 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house, and the child did minister unto the [a]Lord before Eli the Priest.
12 ¶ Now the sons of Eli were wicked men, and [b]knew not the Lord.
13 For the Priests’ custom toward the people was this: when any man offered sacrifice, the Priest’s [c]boy came, while the flesh was seething, and a fleshhook with three teeth in his hand,
14 And thrust it into the kettle, or into the caldron, or into the pan, or into the pot: [d]all that the fleshhook brought up, the Priest took for himself: thus they did unto all the Israelites, that came thither to Shiloh.
15 Yea, before they burnt the [e]fat, the Priest’s boy came and said unto the man that offered, Give me flesh to roast for the Priest: for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
16 And if any man said unto him, Let them burn the fat according to the [f]custom, then take as much as thine heart [g]desireth: then he would answer, No, but thou shalt give it now: and if thou wilt not, I will take it by force.
17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord: for men [h]abhorred the offering of the Lord.
19 [a]Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet complain? for who hath resisted his will?
20 [b]But, O man, who art thou which pleadest against God? [c]shall the (A)thing [d]formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 (B)[e]Hath not the potter power of the clay to make of the same lump one [f]vessel to [g]honor, and another unto [h]dishonor?
22 [i]What and if God would, to show his wrath, and to make his power known, suffer with long patience the [j]vessels of wrath, prepared to [k]destruction?
23 And that he might declare the [l]riches of his glory upon the vessels of mercy, which he hath prepared unto glory?
24 [m]Even us whom he hath called, not of the [n]Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.
25 [o]As he saith also in Hosea, (C)I will call them, My people, which were not my people: and her, Beloved, which was not beloved.
26 And it shall be in the place where it was said unto them, (D)Ye are not my people, that there they shall be called, The children of the living God.
27 [p]Also Isaiah crieth concerning Israel, (E)Though the number of the children of Israel were as the sand of the sea, yet shall but a remnant be saved.
28 For he will make his account, and gather it into a [q]short sum with righteousness: for the Lord will make a short count in the earth.
29 (F)And as Isaiah said before, Except the Lord of [r]hosts had left us a [s]seed, we had been made as Sodom, and had been like to Gomorrah.
