1 Samuel 3:1-10

Samuel’s Call

Now the boy Samuel was working for the Lord with Eli. There were few words from the Lord given in those days, and there were not many special dreams. At that time Eli was lying down in his own place. His eyes had become weak and he could not see well. The lamp of God had not gone out yet. And Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord where the special box of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel, and Samuel said, “Here I am.” He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call you. Lie down again.” So Samuel went and lay down. The Lord called again, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But Eli answered, “I did not call you, my son. Lie down again.” Now Samuel did not know the Lord yet. And the Word of the Lord had not been made known to him. The Lord called Samuel again for the third time. He got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the boy. Eli said to Samuel, “Go lie down. If He calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 Then the Lord came and stood and called as He did the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.”

1 Samuel 3:11-20

11 The Lord said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do a thing in Israel which will make both ears of everyone who hears it feel strange. 12 On that day I will do all I have said I will do against the family of Eli. 13 I have told him that I will punish his family forever for the sin he knew about. Because his sons brought the sin upon themselves, and Eli did not stop them. 14 So I swear to the family of Eli that the sin of his family will not be paid for with gifts given on the altar forever.”

15 Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. But Samuel was afraid to tell Eli about the special dream. 16 Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And Samuel said, “Here I am.” 17 Eli said, “What did the Lord tell you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more, if you hide anything from me of all He said to you.” 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And Eli said, “It is the Lord. Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”

19 Samuel grew. And the Lord was with him and made everything he said come true. 20 All Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel had become a man of God.

Psalm 139:1-6

God Cares for His People

139 O Lord, You have looked through me and have known me. You know when I sit down and when I get up. You understand my thoughts from far away. You look over my path and my lying down. You know all my ways very well. Even before I speak a word, O Lord, You know it all. You have closed me in from behind and in front. And You have laid Your hand upon me. All You know is too great for me. It is too much for me to understand.

Psalm 139:13-18

13 For You made the parts inside me. You put me together inside my mother. 14 I will give thanks to You, for the greatness of the way I was made brings fear. Your works are great and my soul knows it very well. 15 My bones were not hidden from You when I was made in secret and put together with care in the deep part of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw me before I was put together. And all the days of my life were written in Your book before any of them came to be.

17 Your thoughts are of great worth to me, O God. How many there are! 18 If I could number them, there would be more than the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.

2 Corinthians 4:5-12

We do not preach about ourselves. We preach Christ Jesus the Lord. We are your servants because of Jesus. It was God Who said, “The light will shine in darkness.” (A) He is the One Who made His light shine in our hearts. This brings us the light of knowing God’s shining-greatness which is seen in Christ’s face.

We have this light from God in our human bodies. This shows that the power is from God. It is not from ourselves. We are pressed on every side, but we still have room to move. We are often in much trouble, but we never give up. People make it hard for us, but we are not left alone. We are knocked down, but we are not destroyed. 10 We carry marks on our bodies that show the death of Jesus. This is how Jesus makes His life seen in our bodies. 11 Every day of our life we face death because of Jesus. In this way, His life is seen in our bodies. 12 Death is working in us because we work for the Lord, but His life is working in you.

Mark 2:23-3:6

Jesus Teaches about the Day of Rest (A)

23 At that time Jesus walked through the grain-fields on the Day of Rest. As they went, His followers began to take some of the grain. 24 The proud religious law-keepers said to Jesus, “See! Why are they doing what the Law says should not be done on the Day of Rest?” 25 He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he and his men were hungry? 26 He went into the house of God when Abiathar was head religious leader of the Jews. He ate the special bread used in the religious worship. The Law says only the Jewish religious leaders may eat that. David gave some to those who were with him also.” 27 Jesus said to them, “The Day of Rest was made for the good of man. Man was not made for the Day of Rest. 28 The Son of Man is Lord of the Day of Rest also.”

Jesus Heals on the Day of Rest (B)

Jesus went into the Jewish place of worship again. A man was there with a dried-up hand. The proud religious law-keepers watched Jesus to see if He would heal the man on the Day of Rest. They wanted to have something to say against Jesus. Jesus said to the man with the dried-up hand, “Stand up.” Then Jesus said to the proud religious law-keepers, “Does the Law say to do good on the Day of Rest or to do bad, to save life or to kill?” But they said nothing. Jesus looked around at them with anger. He was sad because of their hard hearts. Then He said to the man, “Put out your hand.” He put it out and his hand was healed. It was as good as the other. The proud religious law-keepers went out and made plans with the followers of King Herod how they might kill Jesus.
