A Song of Praise

135 Praise the Lord! Praise the name of the Lord! Praise Him, O servants of the Lord, you who stand in the house of the Lord, within the walls of the house of our God. Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good. Sing praises to His name, for it is sweet. For the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself. Israel belongs to Him.

I know that the Lord is great. He is greater than all gods. The Lord does whatever is pleasing to Him, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and in all waters. He makes the clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning come with the rain. He brings the wind out from where He stores His riches.

He killed the first-born of Egypt, both man and animal. He sent special things to see and did great works among you, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. 10 He crushed many nations and killed powerful kings, 11 King Sihon of the Amorites, King Og of Bashan, and all the kings of Canaan. 12 And He gave their land as a gift, a gift to Israel His people. 13 O Lord, Your name lasts forever. O Lord, You will be remembered for all time. 14 For the Lord will decide in favor of His people. He will have loving-pity on His servants. 15 The gods of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. 16 They have mouths but they do not speak. They have eyes but they do not see. 17 They have ears but they do not hear. And there is no breath in their mouths. 18 Those who make them and those who trust in them will be like them.

19 O house of Israel, give honor and thanks to the Lord. O house of Aaron, give honor and thanks to the Lord. 20 O house of Levi, give honor and thanks to the Lord. You who fear the Lord, give honor and thanks to the Lord. 21 Honor and thanks be to the Lord from Zion, Who lives in Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!

Isaiah 26:1-15

A Song of Trust in God

26 In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city. The Lord saves us and puts up walls to keep us safe. Open the gates, that the nation that is right with God may come in, the one that keeps faithful. You will keep the man in perfect peace whose mind is kept on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever. For the Lord God is a Rock that lasts forever. For He has brought down low those who live on a high place, the high city. He lays it low. He lays it low to the ground. He throws it to the dust. It will be crushed under foot, under the feet of those who have suffered and the steps of those who cannot help themselves.”

The way of the man who is right with God is smooth. O Upright One, make the path straight of those who are right with You. While following in Your ways, O Lord, we have waited for You. To remember You and Your name is the desire of our souls. My soul has a desire for You in the night. Yes, my spirit within me looks for You in the morning. For when you punish the earth, the people of the world learn what is right and good. 10 When favor is shown to the sinful, he does not learn what is right and good. He goes on doing what is wrong in the land of those who are right. He does not see the wonderful power of the Lord.

11 O Lord, Your hand is lifted up but they do not see it. Let them see Your care for Your people and be ashamed. Let fire destroy those who hate You. 12 O Lord, You will give us peace, for You have done all our works for us. 13 O Lord our God, other lords than You have ruled us, but Your name alone is the One we honor. 14 They are dead, and will not live. Their spirits will not return. So You have punished and destroyed them. You have caused them all to be forgotten. 15 You have made the nation great, O Lord. You have made the nation great. You have received much praise. You have made the land larger.

Mark 12:18-27

They Ask about Being Raised from the Dead (A)

18 Some people from the religious group who believe no one will be raised from the dead came to Jesus. They asked Him, 19 “Teacher, Moses gave us a Law. It said, ‘If a man’s brother dies and leaves his wife behind, but no children, then his brother should marry his wife and raise children for his brother.’ (B) 20 There were seven brothers. The first was married. He died before he had any children. 21 The second married her and died. He had no children. The same happened with the third. 22 All seven had her for a wife. All died without children. Last of all the woman died. 23 When people are raised from the dead, whose wife will she be? All seven had her for a wife.” 24 Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you do not know the Holy Writings or the power of God? 25 When people are raised from the dead, they do not marry and are not given in marriage. They are like angels in heaven. 26 As for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses how God spoke to him in the burning bush? He said, ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.’ (C) 27 He is not the God of the dead, He is the God of the living. So you are very much wrong.”
