⁴ And they marched from mount Hor, by the way that leadeth to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom. And the people began to be weary of their journey and labour:

⁵ And speaking against God and Moses, they said: Why didst thou bring us out of Egypt, to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, nor have we any waters: our soul now loatheth this very light food.

⁶ Wherefore the Lord sent among the people fiery serpents, which bit them and killed many of them.

⁷ Upon which they came to Moses, and said: We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and thee: pray that he may take away these serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

⁸ And the Lord said to him: Make brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: whosoever being struck shall look on it, shall live.

⁹ Moses therefore made a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: which when they that were bitten looked upon, they were healed.

² My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready: I will sing, and will give praise, with my glory.

³ Arise, my glory; arise, psaltery and harp: I will arise in the morning early.

2 And you, when you were dead in your offences, and sins,

² Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of this air, of the spirit that now worketh on the children of unbelief:

³ In which also we all conversed in time past, in the desires of our flesh, fulfilling the will of the flesh and of our thoughts, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:

⁴ But God, (who is rich in mercy,) for his exceeding charity wherewith he loved us,

⁵ Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together in Christ, (by whose grace you are saved,)

⁶ And hath raised us up together, and hath made us sit together in the heavenly places, through Christ Jesus.

⁷ That he might shew in the ages to come the abundant riches of his grace, in his bounty towards us in Christ Jesus.

⁸ For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God;

⁹ Not of works, that no man may glory.

¹⁰ For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus in good works, which God hath prepared that we should walk in them.

¹⁴ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up:

¹⁵ That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting.

¹⁶ For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting.

¹⁷ For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world, but that the world may be saved by him.

¹⁸ He that believeth in him is not judged. But he that doth not believe, is already judged: because he believeth not in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment: because the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil.

²⁰ For every one that doth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, that his works may not be reproved.

²¹ But he that doth truth, cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, because they are done in God.
