Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
64 If only You would tear open the heavens and come down! The mountains would shake before You, 2 as when fire burns the wood and causes the water to boil. Come and make Your name known to those who are against you, that the nations may shake in fear before You! 3 When You did powerful things which we did not expect, You came down, and the mountains shook before You. 4 From long ago no ear has heard and no eye has seen any God besides You, Who works for those who wait for Him. 5 You meet him who finds joy in doing what is right and good, who remembers You in Your ways. See, You were angry because we sinned. We have been sinning for a long time, and will we be saved? 6 All of us have become like one who is unclean. All our right and good works are like dirty pieces of cloth. And all of us dry up like a leaf. Our sins take us away like the wind. 7 There is no one who calls on Your name, who stirs himself up to take hold of You. For You have hidden Your face from us, and have given us over to the power of our sins.
8 But now, O Lord, You are our Father. We are the clay, and You are our pot maker. All of us are the work of Your hand. 9 Do not be so angry, O Lord. Do not remember our sin forever. Look now, all of us are Your people.
A Prayer for the Nation
80 Hear us, O Shepherd of Israel, You Who lead Joseph like a flock! You Who sit on Your throne above the angels, let Your light shine! 2 Stir up Your power in front of Ephraim and Benjamin and Manassah, and come to save us! 3 O God, bring us back to You. Make Your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.
4 O Lord God of all, how long will You be angry with the prayers of Your people? 5 You have fed them with the bread of tears. And You have made them drink a big amount of tears. 6 You have made us an object of arguing to our neighbors. Those who hate us laugh among themselves. 7 O God of all, bring us back to You. Make Your face shine upon us, and we will be saved.
17 Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand, the son of man you have made strong for Yourself. 18 Then we will not turn away from You. Give us new life again, and we will call on Your name. 19 O Lord God of all, bring us back to You. Make Your face shine upon us, and we will be saved.
3 May you have loving-favor and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul Gives Thanks for Their Faith
4 I am thankful to God all the time for you. I am thankful for the loving-favor God has given to you because you belong to Christ Jesus. 5 He has made your lives rich in every way. Now you have power to speak for Him. He gave you good understanding. 6 This shows that what I told you about Christ and what He could do for you has been done in your lives. 7 You have the gifts of the Holy Spirit that you need while you wait for the Lord Jesus Christ to come again. 8 Christ will keep you strong until He comes again. No blame will be held against you. 9 God is faithful. He chose you to be joined together with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jesus Will Come Again in His Greatness
24 “After those days of much trouble and pain and sorrow are over, the sun will get dark. The moon will not give light. 25 The stars will fall from the sky. The powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and shining-greatness. 27 He will send His angels. They will gather together God’s people from the four winds. They will come from one end of the earth to the other end of heaven.
The Picture-Story of the Fig Tree
28 “Now learn something from the fig tree. When the branch begins to grow and puts out its leaves, you know summer is near. 29 In the same way, when you see all these things happen, you know the Son of Man is near. He is even at the door. 30 For sure, I tell you, the people of this day will not pass away before all these things have happened.
31 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will not pass away. 32 But no one knows the day or the hour. No! Not even the angels in heaven know. The Son does not know. Only the Father knows.
33 “Be careful! Watch and pray. You do not know when it will happen. 34 The coming of the Son of Man is as a man who went from his house to a far country. He gave each one of his servants some work to do. He told the one standing at the door to watch. 35 In the same way, you are to watch also! You do not know when the Owner of the house will be coming. It may be in the evening or in the night or when the sun comes up or in the morning. 36 He may come when you are not looking for Him and find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to all. Watch!”
