⁷ The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to give you honor in the eyes of all Israel. Then they may know that I will be with you just as I have been with Moses. ⁸ Tell the religious leaders who are carrying the special box of the agreement, ‘When you come to the water of the Jordan River, stand still in it.’” ⁹ Then Joshua said to the people of Israel, “Come here. Listen to the words of the Lord your God.” ¹⁰ And Joshua said, “You will know that the living God is among you because He will be sure to drive away from in front of you the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Hivite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Amorite and the Jebusite. ¹¹ See, the special box of the agreement of the Lord of All the earth is crossing over in front of you in the Jordan. ¹² Now choose twelve men from the families of Israel, one man for each family. ¹³ The religious leaders who carry the special box of the agreement of the Lord of All the earth, will rest their feet in the water of the Jordan. Then the water of the Jordan will be cut off. The water flowing down from above will gather together in one place.”

¹⁴ So the people left their tents to cross the Jordan. The religious leaders carried the special box of the agreement in front of the people. ¹⁵ They carried it to the Jordan and put their feet in the water. (For the Jordan water floods during the time of gathering grain.) ¹⁶ Then the water flowing down from above stood and rose up in one place far away at Adam, the city beside Zarethan. The water flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, was all cut off. So the people crossed beside Jericho. ¹⁷ The religious leaders who carried the special box of the agreement of the Lord stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan. And all Israel crossed on dry ground, until all the nation had crossed the Jordan.

God Helps Men in Trouble

107 Give thanks to the Lord for He is good! His loving-kindness lasts forever! ² Let the people who have been saved say so. He has bought them and set them free from the hand of those who hated them. ³ He gathered them from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.

⁴ Some traveled through the desert wastes. They did not find a way to a city where they could live. ⁵ They were hungry and thirsty. Their souls became weak within them. ⁶ Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble. And He took them out of their suffering. ⁷ He led them by a straight path to a city where they could live.

³³ He changes rivers into a desert and wells of water into a thirsty ground. ³⁴ He changes a land of much fruit into a salt waste because of the sin of those who live in it. ³⁵ He changes a desert into a pool of water and makes water flow out of dry ground. ³⁶ And He makes the hungry go there so they may build a city to live in. ³⁷ They plant seeds in the fields and plant grape-vines and gather much fruit.

⁹ You remember, Christian brothers, we worked night and day for our food and clothes while we preached the Good News to you. We did not want to make it hard for you. ¹⁰ You know, and so does God, how pure and right and without blame we were among you who believe. ¹¹ As a father helps his children, you know how we wanted to help you and give you comfort. We told you with strong words ¹² that you should live to please God. He is the One Who chose you to come into His holy nation and to share His shining-greatness.

¹³ We always thank God that when you heard the Word of God from us, you believed it. You did not receive it as from men, but you received it as the Word of God. That is what it is. It is at work in the lives of you who believe.

The Teachers of the Law and the Proud Religious Law-Keepers ^(A)

23 Then Jesus talked to the many people and to His followers. ² He said, “The teachers of the Law and the proud religious law-keepers have put themselves in Moses’ place as teachers. ³ Do what they tell you to do and keep on doing it. But do not follow what they do. They preach but do not obey their own preaching. ⁴ They make heavy loads and put them on the shoulders of men. But they will not help lift them with a finger. ⁵ Everything they do, they do to be seen of men. They have words from the Holy Writings written in large letters on their left arm and forehead and they make wide trimming for their clothes. ⁶ They like to have the important places at big suppers and the best seats in the Jewish places of worship. ⁷ They like to have people show respect to them as they stand in the center of town where people gather. They like to be called teacher.

⁸ “But you are not to be called teacher. There is only one Teacher, and all of you are brothers. ⁹ Do not call any man here on earth your father. There is only one Father and He is in heaven. ¹⁰ You are not to be called leader. There is only one Leader and He is Christ.

¹¹ “He who is greatest among you will be the one to care for you. ¹² The person who thinks he is important will find out how little he is worth. The person who is not trying to honor himself will be made important.
