Exodus 20:1-4

God’s Ten Great Laws

20 Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house where you were servants.

“Have no gods other than Me.

“Do not make for yourselves a god to look like anything that is in heaven above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.

Exodus 20:7-9

“Do not use the name of the Lord your God in a false way. For the Lord will punish the one who uses His name in a false way.

“Remember the Day of Rest, to keep it holy. Six days you will do all your work.

Exodus 20:12-20

12 “Honor your father and your mother, so your life may be long in the land the Lord your God gives you.

13 “Do not kill other people.

14 “Do not do sex sins.

15 “Do not steal.

16 “Do not tell a lie about your neighbor.

17 “Do not have a desire for your neighbor’s house. Do not have a desire for his wife or his male servant, his female servant, or his bull or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

18 All the people heard and saw the thunder and lightning, the sound of the horn, and the mountain smoking. And when the people saw it, they shook with fear and stood far away. 19 They said to Moses, “You speak to us and we will listen. But do not let God speak to us or we will die.” 20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so you may have enough fear of Him to keep you from sinning.”

Psalm 19

The Works and the Word of God

19 The heavens are telling of the greatness of God and the great open spaces above show the work of His hands. Day to day they speak. And night to night they show much learning. There is no speaking and no words where their voice is not heard. Their sound has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun. It is as a man soon to be married coming out of his room and as a strong man who is happy to run his race. Its rising is from one end of the heavens, and it makes its way to the other end. Nothing is hidden from its heat.

The Law of the Lord is perfect, giving new strength to the soul. The Law He has made known is sure, making the child-like wise. The Laws of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The Word of the Lord is pure, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The Lord is always true and right in how He judges. 10 The Word of the Lord is worth more than gold, even more than much fine gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey straight from the comb. 11 And by them Your servant is told to be careful. In obeying them there is great reward.

12 Who can see his own mistakes? Forgive my sins that I do not see. 13 And keep Your servant from sinning by going my own way. Do not let these sins rule over me. Then I will be without blame. And I will not be found guilty of big sins. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing in Your eyes, O Lord, my Rock and the One Who saves me.

Philippians 3:4-14

I could have reason to trust in the flesh. If anyone could feel that the flesh could do something for him, I could. I went through the religious act of becoming a Jew when I was eight days old. I was born a Jew and came from the family group of Benjamin. I was a Jewish son of Jewish parents. I belonged to the group of the proud religious law-keepers. I followed my religion with all my heart and did everything I could to make it hard for the church. No one could say anything against the way I obeyed the Law.

Christ Must Be Lord of Our Lives

But I gave up those things that were so important to me for Christ. Even more than that, I think of everything as worth nothing. It is so much better to know Christ Jesus my Lord. I have lost everything for Him. And I think of these things as worth nothing so that I can have Christ. I want to be as one with Him. I could not be right with God by what the Law said I must do. I was made right with God by faith in Christ. 10 I want to know Him. I want to have the same power in my life that raised Jesus from the dead. I want to understand and have a share in His sufferings and be like Christ in His death. 11 Then I may be raised up from among the dead.

12 I do not say that I have received this or have already become perfect. But I keep going on to make that life my own as Christ Jesus made me His own. 13 No, Christian brothers, I do not have that life yet. But I do one thing. I forget everything that is behind me and look forward to that which is ahead of me. 14 My eyes are on the crown. I want to win the race and get the crown of God’s call from heaven through Christ Jesus.

Matthew 21:33-46

The Picture-Story of the Grape-Field (A)

33 “Listen to another picture-story. A man who owned land planted grapes in a field and put a fence around it. He made a place for making wine. He built a tower to look over the grape-field. He let farmers rent it and then he went into another country. 34 The time came for gathering the grapes. He sent his servants to the farmers to get the grapes. 35 The farmers took his servants and hit one. They killed another and threw stones at another. 36 Again he sent other servants. He sent more than the first time. The farmers did the same to those servants. 37 After this he sent his son to them. He said to himself, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 When the farmers saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the one who will get everything when the owner dies. Let us kill him and we will get it all.’ 39 They took him and threw him out of the grape-field and killed him. 40 When the owner of the grape-field comes, what will he do to those farmers?” 41 They said to Him, “He will put those bad men to death. Then he will rent the grape-field to other farmers who will give him the grapes when they are ready.” 42 Jesus said to them, “Have you not read in the Holy Writings, ‘The Stone that was put aside by the workmen has become the most important Stone in the building? The Lord has done this. We think it is great!’ (B) 43 I say to you, because of this, the holy nation of God will be taken from you. It will be given to a nation that will give fruit. 44 Whoever falls on this Stone will be broken. And on the one it falls, it will make him like dust.”

45 When the religious leaders and the proud religious law-keepers heard this picture-story, they knew He spoke of them. 46 When they tried to put their hands on Him, they were afraid of the many people. The people thought He was One Who spoke for God.
