78 Hear my doctrine, O my people. Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

² I will open my mouth in a parable. I will declare high sentences of old

³ which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

⁴ We will not hide them from their children; but to the generation to come we will show the praise of the LORD, His power also, and His wonderful works that He has done.

¹² He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt (in the field of Zoan).

¹³ He divided the sea and led them through. He also made the waters to stand as a heap.

¹⁴ Also, in the daytime, He led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

¹⁵ He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink, as with the great depths.

¹⁶ He also brought floods out of the stony rock, making the waters descend like the rivers.

¹² Again, the LORD said to Moses, “Go up into the Mount of Abarim, and behold the land which I have given to the children of Israel.

¹³ “And when you have seen it, you shall be gathered to your people also, as Aaron your brother was gathered.

¹⁴ “For you were disobedient to My Word in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the assembly to sanctify Me in the waters before their eyes. That is the water of Meribah in Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin.”

²⁷ Then they came to Jerusalem again. And as He walked in the Temple, the chief priests came to Him, and the scribes and the elders,

²⁸ and said to Him, “By what authority do You do these things? And who gave You this authority, that You should do these things?”

²⁹ Then Jesus answered, and said to them, “I will also ask you a certain thing. Answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

³⁰ “The baptism of John, was it from Heaven, or from man? answer Me.”

³¹ And they thought amongst themselves, saying, “If we shall say, ‘From Heaven’, He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’

³² “But if we say, ‘From man’, we fear the people.” For all men counted John as a Prophet, indeed.

³³ Then they answered, and said to Jesus, “We cannot tell.” And Jesus answered, and said to them, “Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
