Psalm 47

To the Director: A song by the Sons of Korah.

The Ruler over the Nations

47 Clap your hands, all you peoples!
    Shout to God with a loud cry of joy!
For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared,
    a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
    and nations under our feet.
He chose our inheritance for us,
    even the pride of Jacob whom he loved.
Interlude

God has ascended on high with a shout,
    the Lord has ascended[a] with the blast of a trumpet.
Sing songs to God!
    Sing songs!
Sing songs to our King!
    Sing songs!

Indeed, God is king over all the earth;
    sing a song of praise.
God is king over the nations;
    God is seated on his holy throne.

The nobles among the nations
    have joined the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
    he is greatly exalted.

Genesis 22:15-18

15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16 and said, “I have taken an oath to swear by myself,” declares the Lord, “that since you have carried this out and have not withheld your only unique[a] son, 17 I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in heaven and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the gates[b] of their enemies. 18 Furthermore, through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed,[c] because you have obeyed my command.”

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12

Now you do not need anyone to write to you about brotherly love, since you have been taught by God to love each other. 10 In fact, you are showing love to all the brothers throughout Macedonia, but we urge you, brothers, to keep on doing this even more. 11 Also, make it your goal to live quietly, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may win the respect of outsiders, and have need of nothing.
