Revised Common Lectionary (Semicontinuous)
6 Those who were with Him asked, “Lord, is this the time for You to give the nation back to the Jews?” 7 He said, “It is not for you to know the special days or the special times which the Father has put in His own power.
8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes into your life. You will tell about Me in the city of Jerusalem and over all the countries of Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.”
Jesus Goes to Be with the Father
9 When Jesus had said this and while they were still looking at Him, He was taken up. A cloud carried Him away so they could not see Him. 10 They were still looking up to heaven, watching Him go. All at once two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 They said, “You men of the country of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus Who was taken from you into heaven will return in the same way you saw Him go up into heaven.”
Matthias Is Chosen to Take the Place of Judas
12 The followers went back to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is close to Jerusalem. 13 When they came into the city, they went up to a room on the second floor where they stayed. The followers were Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Canaanite, and Judas the brother of James. 14 These all agreed as they prayed together. The women and Mary the mother of Jesus and His brothers were there.
The God of Israel at Sinai
68 May God rise up. May those who hate Him be divided. And may they run away from Him. 2 Drive them away like smoke in the wind. Let the sinful be destroyed before God like a candle melts by the fire. 3 But let those who are right and good be glad. Let them be happy before God. Yes, let them be full of joy. 4 Sing to God. Sing praises to His name. Make a road for Him Who goes through the deserts. The Lord is His name. Be full of joy before Him.
5 God in His holy house is a father to those who have no father. And He keeps the women safe whose husbands have died. 6 God makes a home for those who are alone. He leads men out of prison into happiness and well-being. But those who fight against Him live in an empty desert.
7 O God, when You went out before Your people, when You walked through the desert, 8 the earth shook. The heavens poured down rain before God. And Sinai shook before God, the God of Israel. 9 You sent a heavy rain, O God. You brought life back to Your promised land when it was dry. 10 Your people made it their home. O God, You gave the poor what they needed because You are good.
32 Sing to God, O nations of the earth. Sing praises to the Lord. 33 Sing to Him Who sits upon the heavens, the heavens of old. Listen, He sends out His voice, His powerful voice. 34 Tell of the power of God. His great power is over Israel and His strength is in the sky. 35 O God, You are honored with fear as You come from Your holy place. The God of Israel Himself gives strength and power to His people. Honor and thanks be to God!
Stay True During Suffering
12 Dear friends, your faith is going to be tested as if it were going through fire. Do not be surprised at this. 13 Be happy that you are able to share some of the suffering of Christ. When His shining-greatness is shown, you will be filled with much joy. 14 If men speak bad of you because you are a Christian, you will be happy because the Spirit of shining-greatness and of God is in you.
6 So put away all pride from yourselves. You are standing under the powerful hand of God. At the right time He will lift you up. 7 Give all your worries to Him because He cares for you.
8 Keep awake! Watch at all times. The devil is working against you. He is walking around like a hungry lion with his mouth open. He is looking for someone to eat. 9 Stand against him and be strong in your faith. Remember, other Christians over all the world are suffering the same as you are. 10 After you have suffered for awhile, God Himself will make you perfect. He will keep you in the right way. He will give you strength. He is the God of all loving-favor and has called you through Christ Jesus to share His shining-greatness forever. 11 God has power over all things forever. Let it be so.
Jesus Prays for Himself
17 When Jesus had said these things, He looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the time has come! Honor Your Son so Your Son may honor You. 2 You have given Him power over all men. He is to give life that lasts forever to all You have given to Him. 3 This is life that lasts forever. It is to know You, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ Whom You have sent. 4 I honored You on earth. I did the work You gave Me to do. 5 Now, Father, honor Me with the honor I had with You before the world was made.
Jesus Prays for His Followers
6 “I have made Your name known to the people You have given Me from the world. They were Yours but You gave them to Me. They have obeyed Your Word. 7 Now they know that everything You have given Me came from You. 8 I gave them the Word which You gave Me. They received it. They know I came from You and they believe You sent Me.
9 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world. I pray for those You gave Me. They are Yours. 10 All that is Mine is Yours. All that is Yours is Mine. I have been honored through them. 11 I am no longer in the world. I am coming to You. But these are still in the world. Holy Father, keep those You have given to Me in the power of Your name. Then they will be one, even as We are One.
