Psalm 119:1-8

The Word of God

119 ·Happy [Blessed] are those ·who live pure lives [L whose way is blameless],
who follow the Lord’s ·teachings [instructions; law].
Happy are those who keep his ·rules [decrees; testimonies],
who ·try to obey [L seek] him with their whole heart.
They don’t do what is wrong;
    they follow his ways.
Lord, you ·gave [commanded] your ·orders [precepts]
    to be obeyed completely.
·I wish I [L O that my ways] were more ·loyal [steadfast; established; set]
in obeying your ·demands [statutes; ordinances; requirements].
Then I would not be ashamed
    ·when I study [staring/gazing at] your commands.
When I learned that your ·laws [judgments] are fair,
I ·praised [thanked] you with an ·honest [upright] heart.
I will obey your ·demands [statutes; ordinances; requirements],
so please don’t ever ·leave [abandon; forsake] me.

Deuteronomy 30:1-9

The Israelites Will Return

30 When all these blessings and curses I have described happen to you, and the Lord your God has ·sent [driven] you away to other nations [2 Kin. 25:1–21; 2 Chr. 36:17–20; Jer. 39:1–10; 52:1–30], ·think about [call to mind; meditate on] these things. Then you and your children will return to the Lord your God, and you will ·obey him [listen to his voice] with ·your whole being [L all your heart/mind and all your soul] in everything I am commanding you today. Then the Lord your God will ·give you back your freedom [restore your fortunes]. He will ·feel sorry for [have mercy on] you, and he will bring you back again from the nations where he scattered you [2 Chr. 36:22–23; Ezra 1:1—2:70]. He may ·send [drive] you to the ends of the ·earth [L heavens], but he will gather you and bring you back from there, back to the land that belonged to your ·ancestors [fathers]. It will be yours. He will give you success, and there will be more of you than there were of your ·ancestors [fathers]. The Lord your God will ·prepare you and your descendants [L circumcise your heart and the heart of your seed] to love him with ·your whole being [L all your heart/mind and all your soul] so that you will live. The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies, who hate you and ·are cruel to [persecute] you. And you will again ·obey [listen to the voice of] the Lord, keeping all his commands that I ·give [command] you today. The Lord your God will make you ·successful [prosperous] in ·everything you do [L all the work of your hands]. ·You will have many children, your cattle will have many calves, and your fields will produce good crops [L …in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your land], because the Lord will again be ·happy [pleased; delighted] with you, just as he was with your ·ancestors [fathers].

Matthew 15:1-9

Obey God’s Law(A)

15 Then some Pharisees and ·teachers of the law [scribes] came to Jesus from Jerusalem. They asked him, “Why don’t your ·followers [disciples] obey the ·unwritten laws which have been handed down to us [L traditions of the elders]? [L For] They don’t wash their hands before they eat [C a Jewish ritual for ceremonial purity].”

Jesus answered, “And why do you ·refuse to obey [break; violate] God’s command ·so that you can follow your own teachings [L for the sake of your traditions]? God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother [Ex. 20:12; Deut. 5:16],’ and ‘Anyone who ·says cruel things to [speaks evil of; curses] his father or mother must be put to death [Ex. 21:17; Lev. 20:9].’ But you say a person can tell his father or mother, ‘I have something I could use to help you, but I have ·given [dedicated; devoted] it to God already [C a practice known as Corban; see Mark 7:10–12].’ You teach that person ·not to [that he need not] honor his father or his mother. You ·rejected [invalidated; canceled; nullified] ·what God said [L the word of God] for the sake of your own ·rules [tradition]. You are hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he ·said [L prophesied] about you:

‘These people show honor to me with ·words [L their lips],
but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me is ·worthless [futile; in vain].
The things [doctrines] they teach are nothing but human ·rules [commandments; Is. 29:13].’”
