Psalm 112:1-9

The Gracious Person[a]

112 Hallelujah!
How happy is the person who fears the Lord,
    who truly delights in his commandments.
His descendants will be powerful in the land,
    a generation of the upright who will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in his house,
    and his righteousness endures forever.
A light shines in the darkness for the upright,
    for the one who is gracious, compassionate, and just.
It is good for the person who lends generously,
    conducting his affairs with fairness.
He will never be shaken;
    the one who is just will always be remembered.
He need not fear a bad report,
    for his heart is unshaken, since he trusts in the Lord.
His heart is steadfast, he will not fear.
    In the end he will look in triumph over his enemy.
He gives generously to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever;
        his horn is exalted in honor.

Psalm 112:10

10 The wicked person sees this and flies into a rage;
    his teeth gnash and wear away.
The desire of the wicked will amount to nothing.

Isaiah 29:1-12

Judgment is Coming to Jerusalem

29 “How terrible it will be for you, Aruel, Aruel,[a]
    the city where David encamped!
Year after year,
    let your festivals run their cycle.
Then I’ll besiege Aruel,[b]
    and there will be sorrow and mourning;
        she will become to me like an altar fireplace.[c]
Then I’ll encamp against you like David,[d]
    and I’ll lay siege to you with towers,
raise siege works against you,
and you will be brought down.
You will speak from the ground,
    and your speech will mumble from the dust.
Your voice will come ghostlike from the ground,
    and your speech will whisper from the dust.

“But the hordes of your enemies[e]
    will become like fine dust,
        and the hordes of tyrants like flying chaff.
Then suddenly, in an instant,
you will be visited by the Lord of the Heavenly Armies—
with thunder, an earthquake, and great noise,
    with a windstorm, a tempest,
        and flames from a devouring fire.
Then the hordes of all the nations that fight against Aruel,[f]
    all that attack her and her fortification[g] and besiege her,
        will become like a dream, with its visions in the night—
as when a hungry man dreams—
    he eats, but wakes up still hungry;
or when a thirsty man dreams—
    he drinks, but wakes up faint,
        with his thirst unquenched.
So will it be with the hordes of all the nations
    that fight against Mount Zion.

Blind to God’s Words

“Act stupid!
    Be astonished!
Act blind,
    and be blind!
Be drunk,[h] but not from[i] wine;
    stagger around,[j] but not from strong drink.
10 For the Lord has poured out upon you
    a spirit of deep sleep—
he has closed your eyes, you prophets,
    he has covered your heads, you seers!”

11 “And this entire vision has become for you like the words of a sealed book. When people give it to someone who can read, and say, ‘Read this, please,’ he answers,[k] ‘I cannot, because it is sealed.’ 12 Or when they give the book[l] to someone who cannot read, and say, ‘Read this, please,’ he answers,[m] ‘I don’t know how to read.’”

James 3:13-18

Live Wisely

13 Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his noble conduct that his actions are done humbly and wisely. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and rivalry in your hearts, stop boasting and slandering the truth. 15 That kind of wisdom does not come from above. No, it is worldly, self-centered, and demonic. 16 For wherever jealousy and rivalry exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil.

17 However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, willing to yield, full of compassion and good deeds,[a] and without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is grown from the seed of peace[b] planted by peacemakers.
